Pictures show how the LeTourneau
Offshore Platform will raise itself
from water level to any point on its 140-foot
steel spuds. These photographs were made at
approximately one-hour intervals as the plat-
form underwent tests in the Mississippi River
at Vicksburg. Operational conditions were sim-
ulated to make the lifted weight equal to that
of the platform when fully equipped for offshore
drilling.
Pictures and information in this folder pertain
to a specific mobile platform, designed and built
for a company which will equip it for offshore
oil exploration. Other mobile platforms utilizing
the same design and power principles will be
manufactured by R. G. LeTourneau, Inc., al-

though specific uses for which they are intended
may require different dimensions and configu-
ration.

MECHANICAL
Power Source: Buda 8DAS-1125 engines drive direct-coupled LeTourneau AC
Generators.
Power Application: LeTourneau Electric Motors driving through LeTourneau
Gear Reductions raise and lower the Platform on the spuds.
Controls: Electric switches control raising and lowering of the platform.
Accessory Equipment: Two LeTourneau 250 Foot-Ton Electric Revolving
Cranes, Three LeTourneau Electric Winches-50,000 pound line pull.
DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS
1. The spuds are of open design, truss braced for stress loads but affording
minimum resistance to wave action.
2. Barge hulls are compartmentalized for storage and work areas.
3. The three spuds are strategically located to provide stable and level support
regardless of ocean floor level variations.
4. The platform can be located under most conditions, including bearing ca-
pacity of bottom, current, and tidal ranges.
5. The platform can be towed in moderate seas.
6. A well slot is provided for moving off a completed well.
7. Storage facilities are provided for pipe, mud, and drilling water.
The LeTourneau Tri-Pod Mobile, Self-Elevating Offshore Platform consists
of a floating barge equipped with three electro-mechanically powered spuds or
legs. The legs can be lowered to ocean bottom and the platform self-elevated
on the legs to the desired height above the water.
The barge structure is of tubular and corrugated design to provide maximum
structural strength and stability with minimum weight and internal bracing.
Three large tubes, one on the starboard, one on the port, and one on the aft
end form the basic hull structure. These are joined by the center section which
has a corrugated bottom design. The tubes and the center section are divided
into compartments by bulkheads, decks, and water-tight doors. Platform con-
struction is of all-welded steel.
The legs operate in spud wells located outboard on the two sides and the aft
end. Elevating and lowering the legs and the platform is handled by LeTour-
neau Electric Gearmotors mounted in the spud wells. The final drive pinions
of these units mesh with the gear racks on the triangular shaped legs. All motors
have integral motor-load brakes that set mechanically when electric power is
cut off, and release electrically when power is applied. These gearmotors are
easily accessible through water tight hatches on the deck.
The open-design, truss-braced legs are of all-welded steel construction. A pon-
toon tank forms the lower end of each leg. Gear racks on the legs extend onto
the pontoons to permit raising them into the spud wells during towing.
Electrical power for operating the legs and elevating and lowering the plat-
form is supplied by four diesel engine-driven LeTourneau AC Generators.
These power units also furnish electrical power for operating the two LeTour-
neau 250 foot-ton Revolving Cranes and the three LeTourneau Electric Win-
ches mounted on the platform deck. The engine-generator sets are located in
the starboard tube of the barge structure. Spud operation and platform eleva-
tion is controlled from the operator's control station on the platform deck.
