INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE: DOCUMENTARY PERSPECTIVES
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the White House in 1992, the National Archives and the White House
Historical Association will present in Washington, D.C., a ten-week festival, "Inside the White House:
Documentary Perspectives." The program will offer films, as well as sound recordings and photographs,
that have documented the Executive Mansion--both in terms of its architecture and the lives of its
inhabitants. The programs are free on Fridays at Noon in the National Archives Theater (Pennsylvania
Avenue entrance).
April 10
"Within These Walls: A Visit to the White House," 1991. This documentary uses rare historical prints,
photographs and motion pictures to show the evolution of the White House during the past 200 years. An
extensive video tour, supplemented by computer-generated floor plans, completes this succinct and
informative video. This program will be introduced by James Rogal, Executive Producer of 'Within These
Walls." (33 minutes)

"The White House: Archive Treasures." Bonnie G. Rowen will present a special program of rare motion
pictures and photographs of the White House she discovered while researching the film, "Within These
Walls" (see April fo): Among the rare items to be presented are an Easter egg roll on the White House
lawn at the turn of the century, President Hoover leading his cabinet in outdoor calisthenics, and Mrs.
Eleanor Roosevelt receiving the Hollywood Victory Caravan in 1942. (60 minutes)

"FDR and the Fireside Chats." Radio engineer Granville Klink will discuss his experiences in the Roosevelt
White House where he assisted the president during his famous "Fireside Chats." Mr. Klink joined WJSV
(now WTOP radio) in 1937 and remains with the station to this day. In addition to recorded selections from
these broadcasts, we will present two short films about the Roosevelt years: "Inside the White House" (1938)
and "Fala" (1943). (60 minutes)
May 1
"President Truman's tour of the White House," 1952. President Truman takes us on a tour of the newly
renovated White House in this rare television kinescope. This program would provide the model upon which
later television tours would be based. (45 minutes)

"The White House Story," 1967. In what is perhaps the most comprehensive single film about the White
House, this documentary provides us with an anecdotal history of the Executive Mansion from its first
occupancy minutes) by President John Adams to its thirty-fourth occupant, President Lyndon B. Johnson. (50

"A Tour of the White House with Mrs. John F. Kennedy," 1961. In this Emmy Award-winning program,
Mrs. Kennedy discusses the meaning and significance of the White House, by focusing upon some of the
historical figures who contributed to its construction and reconstruction. (58 minutes)

"Being with John F. Kennedy," 1983. The cinema verite style of documentary was made possible with the
introduction of portable cameras and sound recording equipment in the late 1950s. For the first time,
filmmakers were able to move freely about with their subjects, permitting more immediacy and candor. As
presidential candidate and president, John F. Kennedy was impressed with the possibilities of this new form
and allowed filmmaker Robert Drew unprecedented access to his presidential campaign and to the White
House. Today Mr. Drew will discuss this period of his career and screen "Being with John F. Kennedy,"
a compilation of the best material filmed--some of which has not been seen before. (100 minutes)
May 29
"Once in a Lifetime," 1967. The White House has occasionally been the site of weddings, of presidents
and their immediate families. The major White House event of the 1967 was the wedding of President
Johnson's daughter, Lynda. Today, Lynda Johnson Robb will introduce excerpts from "Once in a Lifetime,"
the official film record of the wedding. (60 minutes)

"In Performance at the White House." Throughout much of its history, the White House has been a major
showcase of popular and classical entertainment. Today, we present some of the best performances of the
last three decades from the holdings of the National Archives and WETA-TV. (60 minutes)

"A Day in the Life of the White House," 1990. This program is an in-depth look at the daily workings of
the White House. It not only examines the actions of the President, but also of those around him--and how
information is filtered up to him for his attention. Produced by NBC News. (60 minutes)

TO THE PRESIDENT'S OVAL OFFICE ADDRES
ABC
ABC'S BRIAN ROONEY in Los Angeles concurred with President Bush's
assertion that Los Angeles is calmer today than it was last night.
He said there are a lot more National Guard troops there now, and
there is no opportunity to riot on the scale of last night.
When PETER JENNINGS asked if the relative calm resulted from the
President's actions or the exhaustion of the rioters, Rooney
responded that the riots had burned themselves out.
MAYOR BRADLEY praised President Bush for doing everything Bradley
and civil rights leaders asked the President to do and for taking
action to restore peace and order. " (He has done) everything that
we've asked him to do and I have been very pleased with his quick
response and with his total commitment to bring about peace and
order, to restore this tranquility of the streets of Los Angeles."
He said he is pleased with the President's dispatch of federal
law enforcement officers and troops, saying the troops, with the
police and National Guard, would get the situation under control.
BENJAMIN HOOKS said he thinks the President's done a good job
tonight in dealing with the concerns civil rights leaders voiced
in their meeting with him today. He was glad to see that the
President was going to enforce Title 18.
BILL CLINTON said the President did a good job taking the steps
that needed to be taken in this situation. He said if he were
president he'd sign the crime bill now pending in Congress and
address the issues of health care, education, and economic
empowerment to avoid what's happened in Los Angeles over the past
two days.

CNN'S GREG LAMOTT said the President's message tonight will
undoubtedly be extremely well received in Los Angeles.
