Basora (NSC) M. James Wilkinson, State Department Norway King Olav V Ambassador Kjeld Vibe Jan Braathen, Aide-de-Camp to the King DATE, TIME May 8, 1989, 10:30-10:40 a.m. AND PLACE: Oval Office The President welcomed the King and referred to the recent visit of the Norwegian Prime Minister and her initiatives on the environment. The US would be making its own proposals and he hoped they would be well received in Europe. On SNF, the US was working with its Allies and did not want a divided summit, but policy would not be driven by a changing mood in Germany. (f) The President asked about Albert's wife and other mutual acquaintances, and King Olav responded briefly about their state of health. (U) The. President then spoke about his designee for Ambassador to Oslo, Loret Ruppe, praising her political abilities and the international experience she gained as Director of the Peace Corps. (U) King Olav referred nostalgically to his family's five years in the US during WW II, and there was a brief discussion of whether some of the young people in Germany have forgotten.
