SPECIAL SECTION ON EDUCATION
My congratulations to the first-ever All USA College
Academic Team on your outstanding achievements. Each one of you
has proven your intellectual prowess and scholarly abilities.
Each of you has answered the call within yourselves to strive for
excellence. But it is important that you also view yourselves as
part of a dedicated team striving to meet the educational demands
of the '90s.
Today, as we enter a new decade, excellence must be the CORNERSTONE
byword of all our efforts at every level to improve American
education. Last September, the Nation's governors joined me for
HISTORIC
an Education Summit to work, for the first time as team, to
make American education number one in the world. again.

ARE WORKING ESTABUSH
We want to see national goals for excellence established and
TO a restructuring of our educational system in the states that will
make America more competitive and our young people better
prepared to join the workforce of the new decade and beyond. We
want to encourage creativity, innovation and choice through merit
and magnet schools, better science and math curricula, and by
rewarding those who excell in the classroom both students and
teachers.
In fact,
The USA College Academic Team has set the pace in a
competition we can't afford to lose. But I am confident it's a
race we will win because, as a people, the Americans team has have
always been at its best when the challenge is the toughest.
Their
Parents, teachers, school administrators, students and
community members each of you has something to give as a member
of America's education team. Working together, American
education will be second to none.
