Vice President] President of the Turkey Federation. Stuart Proctor^ All the children here.A And of course, our very special guest of honor: --from Kent Gardens Elementary School, Amiden Elementary School and Holy Cross School The Bird. I asked Barbara if she thought there might be an image problem resulting from the event today. She said she was sure the turkey could survive it. o I want to set our guest at ease. After all, he represents America's 45 million turkeys who will again be making their irreplaceable contribution to our Thanksgiving celebration. So take it easy, turkey: we're just here to serve you. o So I've got a question for all the kids here today: Should I let this turkey live? Yes? Well, it's settled then. The bird lives. He'll be going into early retirement, living out his years on a Virginia children's farm. o I want to share some private thoughts with all the young people here. For you are the future of our nation. Like most Americans, this year I will sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with my family, and I will think on the thanks I have to give for all that I've been given. It's been a tough year for me and my family; we've had our losses. But we've also been blessed with a great many gifts. o Health. Family. Friends. My wife is a gift herself -- and as if that weren't enough, she's given me five kids, thirteen grandchildren, and forty-seven of the best years of my life. ((In turkey years, that's even longer.) Then I'll give thanks for the sacred gift of the American Trust: the chance to serve the greatest, freest country on the face of the earth. Only America would reserve a special day for the sole purpose of giving thanks. o Even the loss of one gift reveals another: the knowledge of its full value the gratitude for all that remains. So this Thanksgiving will be a year of special thanks. There's one prayer that I want to share with you today. It goes like this: "Thank you, Lord, for what you have given us; thank you for what you have taken away; thank you for what you have left." O And I want to thank all of my new friends for coming here today. Why don t you come up here and greet the guest of honor.
