RE:
CLERGY SPEECH
Hi. As you see on the schedule, we'll be doing a Clergy-
Laity Banquet speech (whatever that is -- well, maybe we'll get a
meal out of it). It'll be fun to be working with you!
Stephanie L. will be getting more information on the group -
- so far nothing has been forthcoming as to What This Event Is.
A couple of thoughts to begin with, though:
-Could you find copies of major religious addresses of the
past year or so? Specifically:
--Did he do this meeting last year? (Would have been
around this time: the 29th annual Clergy-Laity Congressional
Banquet)
--His speech to religious broadcasters
--His speech to National Conference of Bishops
--Any others
Clayton
--When we get more information about the group, could you
contact whoever it is (if there is a person) who is the
?.
President's Liaison with religious groups and see if we can find
out more about the group, about what the administration thinks
the president should say, etc. (Specifically: unless new
information comes up, I'd like to make this a 1,000-Points-of-
Lightish speech -- volunteer religious service; good,
warm'n'fuzzy stuff, rather than specific legislation.)

CLERGY SPEECH
Memo #2
Hi. A few more thoughts you could help me with:
1. If you don't hear from Doug soon, do you think you could
call him this afternoon? I really need to get the speech done
tomorrow (it's due Thursday, and I'd like to have some time off
on the Fourth), and I can't really start it without his
information.
2. Specific questions for Doug (or whomever):
a. Is George Bush the keynote speaker? How long do
they want the speech? Are other people speaking? Is he before
or after dinner?
b. How many people will be there?
C. (Is Doug the person who could arrange for you and
me to go to the banquet?)
d. Is there a theme for this Conference?
e. Actually, what is the Conference?
--What is it all about;
--who attends;
--what is it trying to accomplish;
--what are its major issues/concerns.
--is it just Greek Orthodox, or all Orthodox sees?
f. Any idea what the Conferees would like to hear
about?
g. What is the banquet, in relatin to the Conference?
(e.g. closing event, biggest event, etc.)
h. Will there be entertainment? Will the moon be
solemn, relaxed, reverential, what?
i. Who needs to be acknowledged, recognized? (and
pronunciations)
Spiritual for all leader Orthodox

Beth to Carol, Clergy Memo #2/ page 2
3. Questions about the Ecumenical Patriarch:
a. When they say it's the first visit here, do they
mean for this individual, or the first time any Ecumenical
Patriarch has visited the U.S.?
b. How would GB address him?
--by name
--by title
His All Holiness
--personally (directly)
--in reference
C. Is he involved in political issues? Or
determinedly non-political?
d. Does he speak English?
4. Speeches. In addition to the elusive National
Conference of Bishops speech, I'd appreciate it if you could
please find copies of speeches given by GB and Ronald Reagan to
the Pope and to Mother Theresa.
Thanks a lot, Carol.

My dear Mr. President:
With the departure of the Patriarch, I write to
thank you for the gracious and generous welcome that
you extended to His All Holiness during his stay in

Patriarch's visit.
I am, of course, personally grateful to you for
placing at the disposal of my Church all of
Washington's governmental facilities to better

Patriarch in the Western World.
I can assure you that my people will never

ORTHODOX
PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: GREEK ORTHODOX KEYNOTE
Thank you, Ted. Your All Holiness: once again, welcome to
the capital of our great nation. It is an extraordinary
privilege tonight to be with you and your distinguished
delegation, and also to be with Archbishop Iakovos [YAH-kuh-
vose], who has distinguished himself in the 30 years he has been
the spiritual leader of your church in the Americas. //
Your All Holiness, meeting with you earlier today was a rare
and inspiring opportunity. Once again, I express my profound
respect. You are a holy man of great spirituality, vision and
humility -- a gentle and revered pilgrim on a mission of peace.
We are specially blessed to be part of your historic journey:
the first time in the 1400-year history of the Patriarchate [pay-
tree-AR-kate] that the successor to St. Andrew has visited the
Western Hemisphere. ///
And greetings to all of you members of the 30th Clergy-
Laity Conference, from 555 parishes across the sweep of the
Americas. I still remember the outpouring of warmth you gave me
when I had the privilege of addressing you two years ago. It is
a delight to see you again, because I feel that we have a special
bond. In particular, I cherish the Greek-American legacy of
putting family values first. This is the finest example of what
our country needs in order to be strong and wise and flourishing.
We admire your unflinching devotion to the passing on of clear
2
moral values, and your emphasis on the importance of a good
education. I noted that in the census returns for the last three
decades, you have ranked the highest of any community in
education.
Also, you stress hard work and the individual initiative
that creates opportunity -- and thus have become the backbone of
small businesses throughout this country. And statistics show
that through your shining example of love and faith and family
tradition, you have almost no crime and drug problems. How
wonderful that 3,000 of your young people this week took part in
a forum about the bitter plague of drugs. 11
I also admire your strength as a community in which your
Greek Orthodoxy means your deeply-rooted spiritual beliefs as
well as the richness of your cultural life. In an age when so
many challenges threaten the fabric of our society, your intense
devotion to your faith and traditions have made you messengers of
hope. You share the richness of your ancient, undivided faith.
You have impressed us with the vibrant ethnic vitality of
your immigrant parents and grandparents, and with your commitment
to Christian service both here and in the lands of your
ancestors' birth. They were drawn here by the beacon of Liberty's
torch. Now you are shining your own beacon of promise back to
your homelands -- always remembering the words of your Greek
National Anthem: "Now as ever valor prizing/Hail, all hail sweet
Liberty!" ///
And what a splendid place Washington is for you to meet.
3
Here, in his hometown, you can proudly tell the story of your
Greek-American predecessor Constantino Brumidi [con-stan-TEE-no
broo-MEE-dee], the Michelangelo of the U.S. Capitol. More than
100 years ago, he produced those eloquent friezes showing scenes
from American history and said with reverence: "My one ambition
is that I may live long enough to make beautiful the Capitol of
the one country on earth in which there is liberty."
And, in Washington, you can rejoice in the magnificence of
your Cathedral of St. Sophia. When I was Vice-President, I used
to live just down the road from Aghia Sophia [uh-HEE-uh SO-FEE-
uh]: the Cathedral of Holy Wisdom. How impressive is its rich
Byzantine style. How moving the sight of its candlelit icons and
astonishing mosaics. It must have been a place of rare beauty
much like this that, back in the 10th century, inspired the
envoys of Prince Vladimir to bring your Orthodox faith to Kiev.
For they said that upon their first glimpse inside an Orthodox
church in Constantinople: "We knew not whether we were in heaven
or earth."
Your All Holiness, you are today trying to bring the peace of
heaven to this earthly life. Your global vision is one of hope.
Hope for what we can do with and for your 250 million spiritual
children -- so many of whom have lived in the chill darkness of
religious persecution. The world rejoices that the new freedoms
of the past year mean that your Orthodox followers in so many
lands are now once again able to follow freely and openly the
road of holy light. //
4
We celebrate the dawn of hope for these people, particularly
those for whom you speak in Eastern Europe. And we also
celebrate the tremendous strength of spirit which has sustained
them through these centuries of repression.
Spirit like that of the 50 million Russian Orthodox believers
who still dream of the day when they can worship openly in their
faith -- which is, after all, 930 years older than communism
itself. We know that day will come because, as a persecutor of
Orthodoxy admitted, "religion is like a nail. The harder you hit
it, the deeper it goes into the wood. " //
But while the events of this past year have been a glorious
beginning, there is still much to do. Because peace is more than
just the absence of war. 11
As we continue the struggle for liberty for all, our way
will be lit with the inner radiance of pastoral pilgrims of peace
like Your All Holiness.
I have often spoken of hope as "a thousand points of light,"
ablaze in the black sky. So I was struck by this Conference's
theme: "Walk as children of light." And I noticed how this verse
began in Ephesians [uh-FEE-shuns]: "For you were once darkness
but now you are light. "
Eastern Europe was once in dark bondage and now begins to see
by the pale glow of a new dawn. It is like your own Easter mid-
night service. As the priest calls "come and receive the light,"
he brings a candle from the altar into the unbroken blackness of
the church. Then he passes the flame to each worshipper's own
5
individual candle, until the church is ablaze with flickering
lights proudly shining together to defeat the dark.
Your All Holiness, you are that candle. Your faithful here
and around the world are that congregation which takes the light
of your vision and spreads it through all lands. ///
I was touched to hear that during this trip you will be
walking across the "Peace Bridge" that links the U.S. and Canada.
What a wonderful symbol of what all individuals and nations must
do: build peace bridges that link -- not separate -- nations.
Then walk upon those bridges to meet others halfway, in order to
celebrate our similarities, not to battle our differences. ///
Together we ask your prayers, Your All Holiness, that God
will guide us in our efforts for peace and that the wide arms of
faith and forgiveness will one day soon embrace a world with
justice and compassion for all.
God bless you, Your All Holiness, and God bless every one of
you gathered here tonight.

Dear Mr. President:
It is of particular joy for me whenever I
communicate with you, even briefly, for I know how
many vital issues occupy your precious time.
However, my reason for writing these few
lines is of great importance to me and my
Community. We would like very much to have you,
our respected President, receive the Head of our
Church, The Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I of
Constantinople, in your Oval Office for a brief
courtesy visit.
He will be arriving at Andrews Air Force
Base on July 2, 1990 and will remain in
Washington from July 3rd to the 12th. Any of
these days and at any hour you designate, at
your convenience, will be gratefully accepted.
Looking forward with great anticipation for
a favorable reply, I remain,
Prayerfully,
President George Bush

Dear Mr. President:
Knowing of your genuine interest in Church and
Community affairs and of your commitment to a kinder and
gentler society, to which my co-religionists and all the
true adherents of all the faiths are eager to contribute, I
take the courage to once again address a message from the
forth-coming 30th Clergy-Laity Congress of our Archdiocese
which will covene in Washington, D. C. July 8th to the 12th.
This year's Clergy-Laity Congress will be blessed and
presided in part by His Holiness, our own Patriarch His All-
Holiness, The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople,
Dimitrios I, who is the Spiritual Head of all Orthodox
Christians in North and South America, Eastern Europe, the
Balkans and the Middle East, which includes the Greeks,
Russians, Roumanians, Albanians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians,
Antiochians, Serbians and Carpatho-Russians.
His Holiness will be arriving in Washington, July 2,
1990 and he will stay and address the Youth Rally on July
4th in St. Sophia Cathedral and the general assembly of the
session. over 2,000 Parish Delegates on July 9, 1990 at its opening
Mr. President, it is my fervent hope, as well as all of
us, that you will find time, out of your extremely busy
schedule to receive His Holiness in the Oval Office and also
-2-
to grace and address our Official Banquet in the Grand
Ballroom of the Hotel Sheraton Washington on the evening of
July 12th.
We ask that you kindly place both requests among the
most important on your agenda. Your presence, which always
illumines our faces and inspires the proceedings of our
Clergy-Laity Congress, will be eagerly awaited by all of us.
Gratefully and most sincerely,

SPIRITUAL LEADER OF 250 MILLION ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS
TO VISIT THE UNITED STATES FOR THE FIRST TIME
ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH DIMITRIOS ARRIVES IN WASHINGTON JULY 2
TO MEET WITH PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH AT THE WHITE HOUSE JULY 12
NEW YORK, NY For the first time, the Ecumenical Patriarch of
Constantinople will visit the Western Hemisphere, arriving at
Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, DC on July 2nd at 12 noon.
His All Holiness Dimitrios, is the Ecumenical Patriarch and
spiritual leader of over 250,000,000 Orthodox Christians. The four
ancient Patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch,
Jerusalem and the Albanian, Byelorussian, Bulgarian, Carpatho-
Russian, Cypriot, Czechoslovakian, Finnish, Georgian, Greek,
Polish, Romanian, Russian, Sinai, Serbian and Ukrainian Orthodox
Churches make up the second largest Christian body in the world.
Patriarch Dimitrios will bring the message of Orthodoxy --which is
one of Christian mission, Church unity and peace- to the citizens
of the United States.
The Patriarch holds the position of spiritual primacy within
the Orthodox Church, unlike the Pope who has a position of
jurisdictional primacy in the Roman Catholic Church. The Orthodox
Church is comprised of self-governing Churches each
administratively independent of the other but united by common
faith, sacraments and spirituality. Their underlying unity is based
on identity of doctrines, sacramental life and worship, which
distinguishes Orthodox Christianity. The Ecumenical Patriarch is
recognized as the first among the heads of the various Orthodox
Churches in the world.
Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in
the Americas and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the
Western Hemisphere, has announced that His All Holiness Dimitrios
will visit the United States arriving in Washington, DC on July 2nd
and departing from Boston on July 29th. He will be in Washington,
DC from July 2-13 and will preside at the 30th Biennial Clergy-
Laity Congress of the parishes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese
