THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
June 20, 1991
MEMORANDUM TO THE PRESIDENT
THROUGH:
DAVID DEMAREST
TONY SNOW TS
FROM:
BETH HINCHLIFFE BH
SUBJECT:
DEDICATION OF FISHER HOUSE
On Monday, June 24, at 9 a.m., you will dedicate the Zachary
and Elizabeth Fisher House at Bethesda Naval Hospital. There
will be about 250 people in attendance, including the Fishers and
representatives of the hospital and of the Navy. General Powell,
Secretary Cheney, and Navy Secretary Garrett may attend.
This is the first of seven homes that the Fishers are
donating to military hospitals across the country. The homes
will be used by family members visiting their ill or injured
relatives.
Your remarks (5 minutes, cards) pay tribute to the Fishers
for their gift, and also for the example they set of private
citizens seeing a need and acting to meet it.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: DEDICATION OF THE FISHER HOUSE
June 24, 1991, 9:00 a.m.
Bethesda Naval Hospital
This is a very special day for Barbara and me -- coming back
to Bethesda to see an exceptional group of people. We're even
happier that we don't have to stay this time. 11 But I want to
make sure you know that, for the wonderful care you gave me, you
have my "heartfelt" thanks. 11 I thought I'd share with you a
letter from a farmers' group that I received during my recovery -
- it said: "This wouldn't have happened if you'd eaten your
broccoli." 111
There's a lot that goes on here at the National Naval
Medical Center that's inspiring -- like the dedication and
commitment of the doctors and nurses, some who have just returned
from the Gulf, others who are still caring for our brave men and
women of Desert Storm.
Today we're celebrating something else that makes this place
remarkable -- the opening of the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher
House. This beautiful building will provide lodging for military
families who have come to visit their seriously ill or injured
loved ones. Because a concerned couple cared, this house will
become a home to families facing the triple blow of critical
illness, financial pressures, and separation.
Listen to how the Fishers dedicate this house -- "to our
greatest national treasure: our military men and women and their
loved ones." Millions were touched by the sacrifice of our
2
troops -- but the Fishers actually acted.
I've spoken a lot about Points of Light -- those who give of
themselves to help others. Elizabeth and Zachary Fisher are
brilliant Points of Light. They saw a need and they moved to
fill it. They didn't wait for Congress. They didn't wait for a
federal study or a committee hearing. They saw a problem and
they solved it. This kind of dedication and ingenuity has made
ours the strongest and most caring nation in the world.
This "comfort home" is one of seven furnished family
retreats that the Fishers are donating to military hospitals
across this country. They were inspired by a simple, wonderful
truth -- the most important part of life is being with someone
you love; helping someone you love; sharing life with someone you
love.
You know, it was a little over a year ago that Barbara spoke
at Wellesley College about our philosophy. Let me share it with
you again today. She said: "You will never regret not having
passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not
closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a
husband, a friend, a child, or a parent."
On behalf of the families who will find peace in this home,
and the ill or injured loved ones who will find comfort in their
presence, I want to thank the Fishers. You represent the best of
what is America. And to our military men and women -- thank you
for your service to our nation. God bless you all.

TEXT OF MRS. BUSH'S REMARKS AT WELLESLEY COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT
Severance Green
Wellesley College
Wellesley, Massachusetts
Friday, June 1, 1990
Thank you very much. Thank you President Keohane, Mrs.
Gorbachev, trustees, faculty, parents, Julie Porter, Christine
Bicknell and, of course, the Class of 1990. I am thrilled to be
with you today, and very excited, as I know you must all be, that
Mrs. Gorbachev could join us. This is an exciting time in
Washington, D.C. But I am so glad to be here. I knew coming to
Wellesley would be fun, but I never dreamed it would this much
fun.
More than ten years ago when I was invited here to talk
about our experiences in the People's Republic of China, I was
struck by both the natural beauty of your campus
and the
spirit of this place.
Wellesley, you see, is not just a place
but an idea
an experiment in excellence in which diversity is not just
tolerated, but is embraced.
The essence of this spirit was captured in a moving speech
about tolerance given last year by the student body president of
one of your sister colleges. She related the story by Robert

Fulghum about a young pastor who, finding himself in charge of
some very energetic children, hits upon a game called "Giants,
Wizards and Dwarfs." "You have to decide now," the paster
instructed the children, "which you are ... a giant, a wizard or
a dwarf?" At that, a small girl tugging at his pants leg, asked,
"But where do the mermaids stand?"
The paster told her there are no mermaids, and she says,
"oh yes there are," she said. "I am a mermaid."
Now this little girl knew what she was and she was not about
to give up on either her identity or the game. She intended to
take her place wherever mermaids fit into the scheme of things.
Where do the mermaids stand All those who are different,
those who do not fit the boxes and the pigeonholes? "Answer that
question," wrote Fulghum, "and you can build a school, a nation,
or a whole world."
As that very wise young woman said
"Diversity
like
anything worth having ... requires effort." Effort to learn
about and respect difference, to be compassionate with one
another, to cherish our own identity and to accept
unconditionally the same in others.
You should all be very proud that this is the Wellesley
spirit. Now I know your first choice today was Alice Walker,
known for The Color Purple. And guess how I know?
Instead you got me - known for the color of my hair!
Alice Walker's book has a spacial resonance here. At Wellesley,
each class is known by a special color for four years the

Class of '90 has worn the color purple. Today you meet on
Severance Green to say goodbye to all of that
...
to begin a new
and very personal journey to search for your own true colors.
In the world that awaits you beyond the shores of Lake
Waban, no one can say what your true colors will be. But this I
do know: You have a first class education from a first class
school. And so you need not, probably cannot, live a "paint-by-
numbers" life. Decisions are not irrevocable. Choices do come
back. As you set off from Wellesley, I hope that many of you
will consider making three very special choices.
The first is to believe in something larger than yourself
To get involved in some of the big ideas of your time. I
chose literacy because I honestly believe that if more people
could read, write and comprehend, we would be that much closer to
solving so many of the problems plaguing our society.
Early on I made another choice which I hope you will make as
well. Whether you are talking about education, career or
service, you are talking about life
and life must have joy.
It's supposed to be fun!
One of the reasons I made the most important decision of my
life
to marry George Bush
is because he made me laugh.
It's true, sometimes we've laughed through our tears
but that
shared laughter has been one of our strongest bonds. Find the
joy in life, because as Ferris Bueller said on his day off
"Life moves pretty fast. Ya don't stop and look around once in a
while, ya gonna miss it!"
RCV BY:THE WHITE HOUSE

SOCIAL OFFICE-

4
I won't tell George that you applauded Ferris more than you
applauded him!
The third choice that must not be missed is to cherish your
human connections: your relationships with friends and family.
For several years, you've had impressed upon you the importance
to your career of dedication and hard work. This is true, but as
important as your obligations as a doctor, lawyer or business
leader will be, you are a human being first and those human
connections -- with spouses, with children, with friends -- are
the most important investments you will ever make.
At the end of your life, you will never regret not having
passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing
one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a
friend, a child or a parent.
We are in a transitional period right now
fascinating
and exhilarating times
learning to adjust to the changes and
the choices we
men and women
...
are facing.
As an example, I remember what a friend said, on hearing her
husband complain to his buddies that he had to babysit. Quickly
setting him straight
my friend told her husband that when
it's your own kids
it's not called babysitting!
Maybe we should adjust faster, maybe slower. But whatever
the era
whatever the times, one thing will never change:
Fathers and mothers, if you have children
...
they must come
first. You must read to your children, you must hug your
children, you must love your children.

Your success as a family
...
our success as a society
depends not on what happens at the White House, but on what
happens inside your house.
For over 50 years, it was said that the winner of
Wellesley's annual hoop race would be the first to get married.
Now they say the winner will be the first to become a C.E.O.
Both of those stereotypes show too little tolerance for those who
want to know where the mermaids stand. So I want to offer you
today a new legend: The winner of the hoop race will be the
first to realize her dream
not society's dream
...
her own
personal dream. Who knows? Somewhere out in this audience may
even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and
preside over the White House as the president's spouse. I wish
him well!
The controversy ends here. But our conversation is only
beginning. And a worthwhile conversation it has been. so as you
leave Wellesley today, take with you deep thanks for the courtesy
and the honor you have shared with Mrs. Gorbachev and me. Thank
you. God bless you. And may your future be worthy of your
dreams.

Dear Mr. President,
During the week of June tenth, we will be dedicating the Zachary and
Elizabeth Fishery House at the National Naval Medical Center. This is the first
of several homes that the Fisher's have given to the military services to provide
a home away from home for the families of our patients who come from across
the world for treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses. The home at
Bethesda will serve as the prototype for the others.
Mr. Fisher's history of quiet philanthropy has included support for
families of servicemen killed aboard the IOWA, in the Marine Barracks in
Beirut and also included the establishment of the Intrepid Museum in New
York. In the past he has been very reluctant to receive accolades for his
donations, but this time he has allowed us to put his name on the Zachary and
Elizabeth Fisher House.
It would be a great honor if you could officiate at the dedication of this
wonderful gift which will be available for those who need it most - the young
families we serve.
We would be happy to establish the dedication date and time to
accommodate your busy schedule.

The Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Armed Services Foundation was
formed for the purpose of helping service men and women and their
families in time of need. The foundation was established after
the terrorist bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut and the
missile attack on the USS STARK in the Persian Gulf. The
Fisher's realized that the hundreds of American military
personnel who lost their lives in these and other events were the
forgotten heroes who serve without due recognition and reward.
The turret explosion on the battleship, IOWA, with a loss of 47
lives was felt as a personal loss to the Fishers. Each of the 47
families received a token of their grief and remorse over this
tragic event. The Foundation also provides scholarship funds to
eligible college students who have served in the Armed Forces or
are the sons and daughters of such service members. In 1990, 75
such youths will attend college under this program.
In 1990, the Fishers devoted their Foundation's resources to
constructing and donating *Comfort homes" for the Armed Forces.
Each will be named "The Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House' and
located on the grounds of various military hospitals around the
country. The homes will be capable of housing up to 16 families
who otherwise would have no place to stay while their military
relative is undergoing a serious operation or treatment. It was
the Fishers' intention to be able to keep service families
together during periods of medical emergencies or crisis when
they especially needed the support and comfort of all of the
family members. Thus far, comfort homes have been established or
are under construction by the Fishers' Foundation at five
locations: National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD; Naval
Hospital, Portsmouth, VA; Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA;
Air force Wilfred Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, TX; and the
Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC.

The Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House
The Fisher House is a beautiful, warm and inviting home with a
very special mission
to help service families through a
life-threatening crisis.
Very sick or injured patients at the National Naval Medical
Center need their families nearby. For those who live far away,
Fisher House provides a stable, comfortable and low-cost haven.
Here they find all of the comforts of home
a place to
sleep, rest during the day, prepare meals, launder clothes, and
allow their young children to lead normal daily lives. By
staying together as a family unit, they may find the inner
strength and spirit to move forward during this period of
overwhelming stress.
Families are encouraged to interact and help each other. So many
lessons can be shared that may facilitate their recovery. Group
support activities to promote socialization are planned such as
picnics, walks and sightseeing.
As residents, families pitch-in by helping to care for the house.
Taking care of their private rooms, picking up after their
children, changing their own linens, and cleaning up after food
prep are all part of living here. Performing these daily tasks
helps them to maintain a focus on reality and distracts them from
mounting anxiety.
Representing the Navy, the Resident Manager will convey
compassionate support in the way of empathy and understanding.
She will help the families help themselves. She will make sure
that they know who, where and when to get help. By the same
token, she will communicate the families' concerns to the Navy.
The Resident Manager will oversee the management of the Fisher
House and direct volunteers. Volunteers will be used to assist
with office and house tasks as well as recreational activities.
A team of patient-care professionals qualifies a family for the
Fisher House. Many factors are considered to create a total
family crisis situation. Families determined to be in greatest
need will be served.

Dear Carol:
I've attached "The Man Who Bought an Aircraft Carrier" (April

floating museum. Hope the article is useful -- and that the
dedication of the Fishers' house is a success!

identified as one of the leaders in the investment building
sector of the real estate industry in the New York area.
