Washington D.C. 20548 Dear Mr. President, CHOICE 2000 I would like to tell you that I really think that your idea about allowing families to choose the school that they send their kids to is a really great idea! But since you are in the process of changing education around, I would like to tell you about my school. I went to school in the Niskayuna school district. I loved that district, both in the elementary and middle schools. The middle school was a wonderful school. They had team teaching, and they did whatever they could to let kids have a high self esteem. The team teachers as well as the other teachers cared greatly for each of their students. I had a really nice social studies teacher named Mrs. STEACHER Polsinelli, who did whatever she could to make kids happy. She was very nice to me, because I was constantly being picked on by the other kids. She also made her class enjoyable, and made the things she taught interesting. Usually, most kids think social studies is very boring. When they had Mrs. Polsinelli, they really enjoyed learning American history. I had Mrs. Polsinelli for two years, because she taught both sixth and seventh grade. (The team I was on both years was mixed between sixth and seventh grade.) Niskayuna had one small problem. The boys' gym teachers PAN READ THIS didn't like anyone who wasn't good in gym. I was terrible in gym. They always got mad at me when I made a mistake, and yelled at me. Near the end of seventh grade, I had that problem solved. We had a very small house in Niskayuna. We needed a bigger house. We looked all over, and finally found a house in Malta, New York. The house was in the Shenendehowa school district. A few weeks before seventh grade ended for me, I asked some of my Niskayuna teachers about Shenendehowa. They said it was a good school. We moved into the house over the summer. I couldn't wait to see what Shenendehowa would be like. They put me in Koda middle school. After the first day, I hated that school. They didn't have locker breaks (Niskayuna did). They gave the entire school four minutes between classes. In those four minutes, they think that you can go to your locker when it is on the other end of the building from all your other classes. If you get into the class while the class bell is ringing, you get instant detention. They use any excuse possible to give kids detention. It says in the rules that the employees of Read, Shenendehowa are not to use physical violence on students. I have seen the aids pull kids out of their chairs, and let them fall on the floor. I have a shirt that says "Oh no Monday again!". One time I was wearing that shirt and I walked by an aid. The aid grabbed my arm and squeezed it, 2 and pulled me over to the other aids, and they all started laughing about that shirt. They said it was funny, and they wanted to know where I bought it. They didn't insult it, but they didn't need to squeeze my arm. I have also seen the aids throw things at students. Those aids constantly find any excuse possible to punish kids. In that school, you are guilty until proven innocent, and when you are proven innocent, they decide to punish you for trying to prove them wrong. Our bus has five kids that go to my middle school, and the rest go to the other middle school. Several times, the bus brought us to school late. The attendance aid didn't believe it was the bus driver's fault, because there were so few kids that go to my school from that bus route. You have to write a reason why you are late in a book when you come in late. I wrote "bus was late" or "late bus". One month later, the dean called me to his office to yell at me for being late. He told me if I was ever late again, he would give me detention. I explained to him about the bus making me late. He didn't care. The only thing I could do was call my parents on the pay phone. My father, (who is a retired police officer) called the dean, and they didn't want to let him talk to the dean. They only let him speak to the dean after he told the secretary that he was a retired police officer. The dean was mad because my father told him that when he worked for the jail, he investigated first, and then accused somebody. The dean was upset that my father called, because he wanted to give me detention since I hadn't had detention yet that year. At that point, we thought the problem was taken care of. Two days later, we got a copy of the paper sent to the principal's office about my being late. It showed the dates I was late, and it said that I told the aid I slept late and missed the bus on each of those days. The paper said that if I ever came late again, I would get detention. The next day, my mother and I went to see the vice principal. He didn't see why I thought that getting a detention was so bad, and didn't see why it mattered whether I deserved it or not. After I left, he went on and on, flattering my mother, telling her how I'll have a great future and all sorts of other things. He decided not to give me the detention. The bus got me late a few more times. My mother took me to school, and got me there at exactly 9:00. School starts at 9:01. Two days later, I was called into the vice principal's office and He not only yelled at me for the same days as last time, but also the time that I was brought to school at 9:00. Again, the reasons were changed. He got mad at me when I told him the aid changed those dates. My mom had to see him again, and he didn't like it that she came, and that she didn't let him give me detention. So far, he hasn't bothered me for being late to school. Last year, my gym teacher (at Shenendehowa), was my 3 second favorite teacher. He was the only Shenendehowa teacher who wanted kids to have a high self esteem. Even though- I didn't do good in gym, he told me to keep trying, and he never picked on me like the Niskayuna gym teachers. He gave me a good grade in gym, because he knew I was doing the best I could do. I wanted to have him this year, but I got the other gym teacher. I know this letter is long, but I needed to give you the background on this school. The gym teacher that I have this year (not the good one) is Mr. Skinner. He is the reason I am writing this letter to you. Mr. Skinner is also a health teacher. I didn't have him for health last year. Last year, he spoke for the other health teacher's classes as well as his own, in back-to school night. He was super sweet in front of the parents. My mom thought he was really nice. On the first day of gym class with Mr. Skinner, he walked into the gym, and his first words were "The Bu sh stops here!". I know teachers are not allowed to swear like that. Then he started calling the class pigs, slobs, and retards. He had no right to do that, and he doesn't even know anyone in the class. Then, every other sentence was "I don't give a sh about this I don't give a sh about that" Then he said, "If you don't like me, I don't care because I don't like you, and if you have a problem with that, see your Congressman, because I don't want your opinion. As far as I'm concerned, you don' have an opinion!' He directed this to the whole class. Then he said that anyone who gets a low grade in gym is a retard. Then after calling us pigs, and slobs a few more times, he went into the locker room, to go over the rules again. He said to go in and sit down in the first aisle. There was only enough room on the benches for ten kids to sit. Everyone else had to stand. The teacher walked in, and said, (these are the exact words he used) "What are you pigs doing taking up the entire bench, while the slobs have to stand against the wall? There S enough room for everyone on the floor. That's where you're all going to sit!" Then he started laughing in a mean way. The whole time, he acted as if he enjoyed the fact that everyone was scared to death of him. Then he said that anyone with asthma doesn't have an excuse not to run. The other gym teacher says that anyone with asthma can only run half as much as the rest of the class. I really don' think that teacher should even be teaching. My father called the principal about this teacher. The principal didn't believe my father, and said that the teacher probably said that he didn t want us to act like pigs and slobs. All the principal did was defend that teacher. He said that the teacher has been there for twenty years, and they ve never had a complaint. Nobody has ever complained because they ve been scared of Mr. Skinner. This teacher demands respect from the students, but he thinks he can treat 4 us like filth. School is not supposed to be like that. The only thing the principal cares about is whether the teacher physically assaulted us or not. He doesn't care that the teacher is insulting us. He doesn' t believe us, and I think that Mr. Skinner will deny it, anyway. The school officials are all like that in Shenendehowa. They never want to listen to the parents, and they like treating the kids like dirt, and stepping all over them. I used to like education in Niskayuna. Now I hate school because of Shenendehowa. I still get A's & B's, but I can't stand school anymore. Is there anything I can do about it? The guidance counselors don' care either. All they do is change the subject when there's a problem. I think that the entire school district is too big. They have over ten thousand kids in their 7 too big district, and they cover five towns. Please send me some advice about what I should do about this gym teacher and his insults. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I'm sorry it's so long. My address is: P.O. You are so busy trying to be President of the World that you don't realize what is going on right under your own nose. In Dinwiddie, VA, at a football game, someone started shooting at everyone. In Eden, NC, a man stabbed an old lady with a butcher knife in the parking lot of Eden Mall. Don't forget Jeffery Dahmer. And the Little Rascals Day Care event. I know that Saddam Hussein was a threat to the US and that the Soviet Union may have an effect on us in maybe two or three years, but you should take care of your own country before you worry about the world. If you don' t, we may not be around for the Hitlers and Husseins to be a threat to I also think that you ought to spend less money on war and weapons and spend more on education. These kids that are the students of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. Do you want a bunch of poorly educated idiots running this country in about 25 or 30 years?I don 't think SO. I know I don't. You promised a kinder, gentler nation, and before your term is over you go to warewith Iraq Where is all that kindness and gentleness?I want to know. Alder Hillsboro, OR 97123 September 12, 1991 President George Bush Office of the President 1600 Pennsylvania Ave N.W. washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Sir: I am a Poynter ninth grader and I have some concerns that I would like to make known to you. First of all, I am aware of the environmental garbage problem. Each person creates approximately 5 pounds of garbage daily. That is disgusting. My children will have to put up with this HUGE mess we are creating. But I have a solution for the problem. There could be a law requiring the act of recycling all materials that are recyclable. I am aware many cities have curb-side pick up and many cities have recycling umits at their dump sites. If you are as concerned about the environmental garbage problem as I am you 11 do something about this ugly problem facing us. Second, I'm concerned about my education. My school's budget keeps getting cut back further and further every year. How are we supposed to learn without money to pay for supplies? The high school I will be attending next year juat had to cut back one elective for students' because they didn't have enough money to pay the teachers for that extra time. I'm planning on being a veterinarian and the best that Ican be. But to do that I need all the electives I can get ahold of if not more. If my education is being cut back because of the budget. How am I supposed to be the best I can be if I can't learn everything I need to know? My education is extremly important to me because what I am as an adult makes up the future of the United States. I also care very deeply about animals and their rights. Too many animals are killed for medicine and its done cruelly. Rabbits' eyes are pryed open and an experimental drug forced into the animal's eye. Isn't this cruelity to animals and isn't that illegal? Also, dogs and cats are used and are held down while some horrible drug is forced into them via shot, cream and wther mean way. Sir, I believe that the only way is the matural way using exercises and massagesinstead. You may say that this practice "saves human lives" Butit ends the animals' lives or makes them misersble. These animals are in agony and great pain. I'm also concerned about the homeless situation. These people go hungry and live under bridges and in boxes. This is unhealthy and sad. These peeple don't have enough money to rent or buy a house or some sort of shelter. I have an excellent solution for this large scale problem. There is a house next door to me that the owner can't rent because of its poor condition. He counts it on hix taxes as an "Income Loss." You as the government could require him to fix up this house and find a tenant within a fair amount of time. If he hasn't found a tenant by the set date, then you as the government could require him to allow a homeless person (s) to live there giving them a place to live saftly and a place to look for a job. As soon as the tenant found a job (within a fair amount of time) they could begin to pay rent. This way my neighbor would have a tenant and the government could reduce the amount of homeless by requiring all homes, such as the one next door to me, to be fixed up in a similar manner. This would reduce the homeless population and imp ove the U.S.'s streets by reducing the problem. Thank you Sir, for reading this and for listening to The United States youth speak. I would greatly appriciate a prompt reply. Rebecc Rebecca Sincerely, A. A. Styffe Suff Rebecca A. styffe 1310 S.E. C. Mr. Bush My name is David Victory, and I've written you once before. Last time it was about abortion, this time it is about the environmental pollution that is going on today. I've founded a group in service to the environment called The Youth Environmetal Services Inc. In cooperation with The International Green Cross, founded by Harry Martin Jr. I'm writting this letter because I amsworried about the planet we live on today. Environmental Pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their surroundings. Examples of this are air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, and solid wastes. If we don't do something about this soon, the earth, and everything on it will die! Such ways to get rid of pollution are recycling and reusing. I would like to know your opinion on this issue and the ways we could stop pollution. Thank you for your time and efforts. September 3, 1991 It's got to be done by someone, why not you and me. Thank you very much. Sincerly David Victory, head of The Youth Environmental Service Inc. NW washington, D.C 20500 Dear President Bush: my name is Jeff Rivera, I'm 15 years old, and I'm in 9th grade attending Poynter Junior High. It is because of a series of discussions abo Jt our government and this nations pro blems in our "Local government" class, that / have decided to write you about a concern of (S.V.) mine. TRADE- Really, it's the meat of our nation, and with the results of the newly forming Soviet Union it is really going to have an affect on our nation, but then there's a problem. Japan, Holland, Hong Kong and Great Britain! Not to say they are the problems we face in themselves - they are all very successful, therefore, in their nation; - butits their trade !! The U.S takes in SO much of their products, (CONT'D) over and over with no product in return to them, so we are in natuonal debt and they profit from it, why don't We do more to adapt to their circumst ances and develope more quality products to sell. / mean, products in themselves, not just raw material! It is especially true in Oregon. we sell Lumber to Japan they make products and send it back with a price double of what its worth. Anyone would admit that they are very smart wokies and if their system works well with them why wouldn't it work for the U.S. infact, it would work even better because we could self supply our own raw materials and yet also it would give Americans more jobs, and may Solve the unemployment problems, we have. If we are to continue as a nation in the path we are going, we Will be more of a Japan States" rather than an United States. As a young man / don't want to have to live in a land where debt is nigher than our trade. Please consider my concern the next time you make a maj or decision affecting the future of thu national on and its people and their economy. Thank you, Jour Sincertly, IFFF f. We think that the current is the main soulition to the Bermuda triangle mistery. We think that because when people sleep on the Bermuda clobands, during the might the current takes them away. so thats howthe sailboats dissapear! It's the same way with airplanes. One way to lose cargo is to have the shipe run into icelurgs! Do you think we solved the Bermuda triangle mistery? Yes or no?
