Emerson once said, "Every ship that comes to America got its
chart from Columbus." For half-a-millennium, what Columbus
founded has helped chart the course of exploration and discovery
-- sailing freedom's ship to every corner of the earth. //
Just as Neil Armonstrong's first step on the moon was a
giant leap for mankind, Columbus' first footfall in the new world
was a giant leap for civilization. // Today, we salute not only
this spirit of progress but also the story of this Nation --
unafraid / ever-changing / devoted to the blessings of liberty
and the principles that unite all Americans. //
Those who see Columbus' discovery of the New World as not
"politically correct" should keep something in mind: The land
that became America sparked a bold experiment that produced
democracy / the greatest system of government ever devised by
man / a system so strong it not only tolerates your dissent -- it
encourages it. //
Columbus Day celebrates that truth / the idea that we do not
value diversity merely because America is strong -- America is
strong because we value diversity. // In that spirit, it is now
my privilege to sign a proclamation naming October 14, 1991, as
Columbus Day. Thank you, and God bless America.

ONE THING I DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE CRITICISM OF COLUMBUS IS THAT IF
HE HADN'T DISCOVERED THE NEW WORLD, SOMEONE ELSE ********** INEVITABLY

WE COULD BE OBSERVING "BLACK BEARD THE PIRATE DAY."
