Schumacher: Nein, mein Traum war
es, Rennfahrer zu werden. Für diesen
sehr teuren Sport gab es jedoch nicht
genug Geld bei uns zu Hause. Der
Rennsport reizt mich aber auch heute
noch. Ich habe einmal einen Fahrer-

ich habe ein sehr gutes Gespür dafür.

Fußball?

Hause immer auf der Straße gekickt,
ich war da ca. 8 Jahre alt. Irgendwann
hat dann ein Freund gesagt: "Geh' doch

dann so ziemlich alle Positionen
gespielt, bis meine Mutter sagte, "kon-

WELCOME
TO SOJOURN
W
elcome to Sojourn, ITT Sheraton's guide to the lifestyles and culture of
contemporary Europe.
The festive season's over for another year, but as the Christmas tree is taken down
spare a thought for 1991. Wars, scandals, achievements - it was quite a time. But how
much can you remember about it? Give our news quiz a whirl and surprise yourself!
The post-Christmas blues and the winter chills give you plenty of excuse to try your
hand at shaking a cocktail or two. Our feature discloses some special recipes straight
from the bars of Sheraton hotels around the region - or you might like to try inventing
your own.
Our travel feature takes a look at Tel Aviv - not just sand and concrete, but a resilient
city with a spirited population. We focus on what makes Israel's second city tick.
Making the City of London tick is the Bank of England, which has been going
through difficult times recently, what with the recession and scandal too. But what's it
really like? We look at the history of this mighty establishment and find out how it
became such a powerful financial institution.
This issue heralds a new regular feature, letting you behind the scenes of the world of
hotel management. We begin with a look at the working life of Jean-Michel Gauffre,
Executive Chef of the Sheraton Edinburgh in Scotland.
In addition, we have our other regular features: news from the World of ITT
Sheraton, a comprehensive listing of ITT Sheraton hotels in the region, news and views
from around Europe in our Heartbeat section and a Spotlight on the African hotels in
the ITT Sheraton chain.
ITT Sheraton is a worldwide hospitality company with nearly 500 hotels, inns, resorts
and all-suites in 65 countries, dedicated to providing consistent, friendly, quality service.
Please feel free to take this copy of our magazine away with you as your European
travel companion.
Wishing you a most enjoyable stay, a happy and healthy New Year.

SPOTLIGHT
There are currently eight Sheraton botels in Africa and the

of its bost country and culture whilst providing all the

BUSINESS
The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street generally conjures up
visions of sombre City gents, gold bars sitting securely in
safes, or clerks at work maybe two bundred years ago. So
what's the Bank of England really like- and how did it
become such a mighty financial institution?
TRAVEL
Tel Aviv tends to get side-stepped by those on their way to
16
Jerusalem or other Israeli sites of note. But it's difficult to
ignore the country's second city- whilst it's an infant in
comparison to other Israeli cities it has an atmosphere all of
its own which is a delight to encounter.
FOOD AND DRINK
Now that the party season's here what better way of shaking
20
off the chills of winter than with a cocktail or two? We
asked the cocktail creators of Sheraton botels around
Europe for their own special concoctions and let you in on
one or two of their trade secrets.

development.

THE BANK

ENGLAND
FROM LEATHER LEDGER TO DEALING DESK
Written by Richard Elliott
The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street generally conjures up visions of
sombre City gents, gold bars sitting securely in safes, or clerks at work maybe
two hundred years ago. So what's the Bank of England really like - and how
did it become such a mighty financial institution?

exist right up to 1973, when the
liveried guards were replaced by the
services of a private security company.
However, even with its own
guard, the Bank's security still left
much to be desired. In 1836 a sewer-
man wrote to the Bank's Directors
saying that he would like to meet
them in the bullion room. At the
appointed hour, he amazed the
Directors by "breaking in" through
an old drain in the floor. The honest
sewerman was rewarded with a sub-
stantial sum of money and the "secret
passage" subsequently secured.
Whilst it escaped physical attack
for the most part, the Bank has not
always escaped the wrath of the
satirists, particularly when the
country's financial well-being was in
jeopardy. In 1797 the Bank temporarily
suspended gold payouts in exchange
for its notes, due to the drain on its
finances caused by the wars with
France and Spain, a Restriction
Period which lasted for 24 years. To
meet the coin shortage, the govern-
ment authorised the Bank to circulate
Spanish silver dollars, counter-
marked with the head of George III.
The Restriction Period prompted
political and satirical criticism aimed
at the Bank and the government, and
one such attack resulted in the well-
known nickname, the Old Lady of
Threadneedle Street. Richard

TIPS FOR COCKTAIL SUCCESS
1. Keep basic equipment handy when mixing cocktails - corkscrew and bottle opener, shaker, measuring cups, ice
bucket and tongs, fruit squeezers for fresh juice, long-handled spoons for mixing.
2. Cocktails should always be served icy cold - don't stint on the ice. Chill glasses and shakers if possible.
3. Have a selection of glasses for different types of cocktails. Best choices are fine glass with a stem. Keep glasses
scrupulously clean.
4. Use your imagination when decorating your cocktails - use flowers as well as fruit, frost the glass with
coloured sugar or salt.
5. Take advantage of those bottles in your drinks cabinet which are almost finished or beginning to crystallise -
use these to mix with inexpensive spirits or juices to create your own drinks.

As people say, "once is never
enough" and so it was for Sheraton

On September 14, twenty-six
vintage sports cars departed from
central Lisbon and began a 300 kilo-
metres drive to Sheraton Pine Cliffs
in the Algarve. The first of what
could well be an annual event,
Sheraton Pine Cliffs Classic Car Run
attracted an impressive entry from
all over Portugal and as far afield as
the United Kingdom.
The Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Dodge
Brothers, Ford, Rolls Royce, Talbot,
BMW and Riley vehicles made for a
unique and magnificent sight.
Upon arrival at Pine Cliffs Golf
and Country Club, entrants experi-
enced typical five-star Sheraton
hospitality. A wonderful open air
buffet dinner, again hosted by Nigel
Mansell, went on till late in the
evening, accompanied by live music
from a Portuguese band.
The fun continued the following
day with events aimed at testing
drivers' ability in controlling their
vehicles in confined spaces. Most
managed exceptionally well and
provided the audience with a fine
display of how motoring used to be.
Others felt that Pine Cliffs landscap-
