TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1990 \ 3:30 P.M.
0
I WANT TO WELCOME MAX (FISHER), BoBBy (HOLT),
LARRY (BATHGATE), AND THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE RNC
EAGLES INAUGURAL COMMITTEE. IT IS A PLEASURE TO BE
WITH YOU -- ESPECIALLY IN WASHINGTON. ((SOME SAY I'VE
SPENT MORE TIME ON THE ROAD RECENTLY THAN CHARLES
KURALT)).
0
((OVER THE LAST WEEK I'VE VISITED FIVE SOUTH
AMERICAN NATIONS. WHAT A RECEPTION. RED CARPET.
21-GUN SALUTE. //

WHEN I WENT DOWN THE STAIRS I TOLD SOMEONE I WAS
SURPRISED BY THE BIG GREETING. HE SAID, "Not AS
SURPRISED AS WE ARE -- WE EXPECTED BARBARA. ")) //
0 LET THERE BE NO CONFUSION ABOUT WHY I'M HERE.
To THANK EACH OF YOU WHO HAVE GIVEN OF YOUR TIME -- AND
OF YOURSELVES. TOILING ON BEHALF OF THE REPUBLICAN
PARTY -- AND ESPECIALLY, THE EAGLES PROGRAM. //
0
I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WERE WORKING THE PHONES
EARLIER TODAY -- HELPING TO RAISE MORE THAN $4 MILLION
FOR FEBRUARY'S EVENT AT THE KENNEDY CENTER.

ROOSEVELT ROOM

O
Max (Fisher) and Larry (Bathgate), thank you for that
introduction. I want to welcome Bobbby (Holt) and the members of
the RNC Eagles Inaugural Committee. It is a pleasure to be with
you -- especially in Washington. ((Some say I've spent more time
on the road recently than Charles Kuralt)).
O
((Over the last week I've visited five South American
Nations. What a reception. Red carpet. 21-gun salute. //
When I went down the stairs I told someone I was surprised by the
big greeting. He said, "Not as surprised as we are -- we
expected Barbara. ") //
O
Let there be no confusion about why I'm here. To thank
each of you who have given of your time -- and of yourselves.
Toiling on behalf of the Republican Party -- and especially, the
Eagles program. //
o
I understand that you were working the phones earlier
today -- helping to raise $ , for February's event at the
Kennedy Center. Congratulations for that -- and for the message
you've spread: The letters "GOP" don't stand merely for Grand
Old Party -- but for Growth, opportunity, and prosperity. //
o
It's hard to believe the 1990 Elections are history --
and that half of our first term is over. Yes, we have done much.
2
But no matter how much we've achieved, there's still much more to
do. //
Americans have seen us act decisively at home from
education to the environment. Yet our act actions abroad are
equally critical. So let me close with an issue of concern to
all Americans. The Persian Gulf. // Both Democrats and
Republicans know that what is at stake is the very principle of
international order: whether aggression pays -- or whether
aggression is punished. //
We will resolve this crisis -- we don't know whether it
will be peacefully or not, but this we do know: Brutality will
not be tolerated. America will not look the other way. We will
not waver -- and Saddam's aggression will not stand. //
Right now -- half a world away -- our young men and
women are showing that America would not be the land of the free
if it were not also the home of the brave. // They deserve --
and have -- our support and prayers. Let's stand up for them at
home and abroad -- working for better government and a stronger
America, too. 11
O
Thank you for what you've done for America and the
Republican Party. God bless each of you. And now, why don't we
take some pictures?
