Back at the White House on January 16, 1990, the President had an early meeting with Vice President Dan Quayle, Senator Richard G. Lugar, and Chief of Staff John Sununu before his morning intelligence briefing at 8:05 a.m. He then attended his morning national security briefing by General Brent Scowcroft. Later in the morning, the President gave interviews to the Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report and attended two photo opportunities. Following lunch with the Vice President, the President held an array of meetings in the Oval Office and left the White House grounds for several community events in the Washington D.C. area. Back at the White House, the President met with domestic policy staff and speechwriters to discuss his upcoming State of the Union address. That afternoon, he also held a lengthy meeting with high level national security and defense advisors. President and Mrs. Bush hosted a small private dinner party in the White House Residence that evening.
