BUSH PRACTICES CASTING
OR
THE ATTACK OF THE KILLER MOSQUITOS
Episode 31: Prudent recreating.
At precisely 5:20 a.m. your President popped into his limousine,
D.C. tag 090 380, and roared into Kennebunkport for a fishing
expedition off the dock of Joe Rinaldi, owner of Dock Square
Clothiers.
At 5:31 a.m. your President made his first cast from a small
dinghy with Ken Raynor, the President's favorite golf pro.
Cameraman Joe Marquette noted testily, "I can't even see to
focus."
A cast of 100 people was splayed out on the surrounding marshes
behind the old Grist Mill with spotters in regular black uniforms
desperately searching for any sign of fish. Mostly they swatted
mosquitos. The President proved an energetic caster but a
fruitless one.
He and Raynor drifted around the inlet for two hours and 35
minutes, making one strike, as the pool grappled with mosquitos
moved from the veranda of the country store to the bank of the
Kennebunk River.
At one point Bush radioed to the Secret Service to permit the
press pool to move closer to the scene of his frustration. The
press watched as Bush and Raynor drifted toward the drawbridge of
downtown Kennebunkport.
The President said to the pool, "Any mosquitos over there?" But
oddly he did not seem troubled by them. However, your pool has
solid evidence that extensive use of Skin So Soft by the Secret
Service has rendered dawn's mosquitos immune.
Nobody on the bridge seemed to know that the Energetic Caster was
the President. There were two guard boats and another boat with
two of Raynor's friends, Brian Golden, Raynor's brother-in-law,
and Bill Forest, unidentified. They allegedly caught one fish,
but out of courtesy did not boast about it.
Fashion note: Bush was in a blue shirt, tan, well-worn, fishing
vest and a white hat which he later exchanged for a camouflage
duck-bill.
He was open to advice and followed the pools suggestion the fish
were biting closer to the pool. The photographers pronounced the
lighting "gorgeous, fantastic, kodachrome-quality.' Bush's
comments on the fishing were under his breath.
One verbatim Bush quote: "I'm surprised there's not more weeds."
Fishing note: Bush experimented frequently with a change of
lures including a giant red plastic worm. Nothing worked.
John Herrick said that Bush has been planning this trip for
months, first talking about it in the Oval Office. It was set up
yesterday on the golf course when Raynor assured Bush, "we really
hammered them today (in the river.) Bush grumpily noted that
there were "no witnesses" to Raynor's claim of having snared five
fish Sunday. The highlight of the morning for Bush seemed to be
"one large swirl" whatever that is.
There were two moments of mild excitement for the pool. At one
point Bush snared his line on a rock; another time he swatted the
water with his fishing rod to shake off some weeds. Golden got
into Bush's boat for half an hour, but he didn't catch anything
with Bush either.

At 8:05 a.m. Bush got out of the boat carrying his lures and
looking dejected. Asked how he rates Javier Perez de Cuellar's
chances of success on the negotiating front (remember the Gulf
Crisis,) Bush said, "Better than we did today."

BUSH-MULRONEY SCRUM AT WALKER'S POINT
Commanders Bush and Mulroney approached the microphones wearing
blue jackets, open-collared sports shirts and beige-ish slacks.
Bush in brown topsiders, Mulroney in brown Guccis. Each strode
casually with his left hand in his pocket. Their wives sat
chatting off to the right on the rocks surrounding Mrs. Bush's
cutting garden. Mrs. Bush wore her same blue and white top with
white slacks and a very vogue wide-brimmed, straw hat in tan.
Mrs. Mulroney was dressed in white-white with sunglasses.
Ranger sauntered out mid-scrum, parading by the podium. But he
left quietly after Bush snapped his finger and pointed.
In later comments, Bush did his best not to disspel any
suggestion that the pep in Ranger's step may have something to do
with Millies improved health.
Hearing that (you have the text), Mrs. Bush unleashed a NATO
defense -- attack one, attack all -- in response. Her stern
warning: "That may be the end of a 45 year marriage! This is
(pointing to emphatically at Millie) the perfect dog."
Later, as the families posed for pictures, Bush himself showed a
little pep. He playfully snatched back the brim of Mrs. Bush's
hat as the cameras started clicking.
Mulroney said he was going swimming. Plans seemed to involve
Fidelity, judging from the gathering of photogs in the boats off
Walker's Point.

MULRONEY ARRIVAL
Top of the news. Marlin asked Bush if reporters should return to
Washington Tuesday. Bush said, according to Marlin, "I wouldn't
urge people to go back just for that." Marlin says there will be
no press conference and there are nothing other than routine
meetings scheduled, including an NSC meeting and budget session.
Mulroney and Bush promised to take questions at the 3:30 p.m.
scrum.
Arrival uneventful. Mrs. Bush was in a blue and white flowered
shirt and white pants (no hat) and Bush was in a red-knit sports
shirt and green sports coat. They hugged and kissed the Mulroney
children and Mila Mulroney. Several Bush grandchildren seemed
delighted to have new playmates and were jumping up and down.
Scowcroft in a red and white knit shirt came out to chat with the
two men.
Asked if Canada will contribute more than three ships to the
Gulf, Mulroney faked a blank look.
Marlin said he did not know if the United States is expelling the
Iraqi Ambassador. He said he was told State would handle that.
Roman says, as far as he knows, we are only cutting back their
diplomatic personnel.
