At the Ipanema Room, a 26th floor conference center of the
Sheraton, President Bush dressed in his birthday suit -- navy
blue business suit with blue and red striped tie -- met around a
rectangular table this morning at 10:00 with American
environmentalists and American officials.
The president did not take questions. He made a few stray
comments that were not picked up by poll reporter's tape
recorder. One was a one-syllable response to the balanced budget
vote, the other saying that all environmental questions were
covered in his speech this afternoon.
Environmentalists included: Russell Mittermeier president of
the Conservation International, Noreen Kennedy of the
International Business Council, Nicholas Yost of the American Bar
Association, Don Edwards of U.S. Citizen's Network, Theresa Fund
of the Environmental Defense Fun, James Malone of the Heritage
Foundation, Dianne Dillon Ridgely of the YWCA International,
and Abraham Katz, president of the International Chamber of
Commerce and Russell Train, chairman of the World Wildlife Fund.

"Assembled here in this room are some of the leading
environmentalists, and NGO leaders, and i'm anxious to here from
them how things are going--need to put more emphasis."
Q: Will you win them over to your views?
A: "I not sure winning is required."

amendment.

that fight. The taxpayers want it, we're going to somehow
do what they want, keep working."

At 12:45 the President joined 22 guests at the Demoiselle
Restaurant, a French restaurant at the Earth Summit Convention
Center, known as Riocentro. Half of the guests were U.S.
officials. There were also eight third world environmentalists,
including Maria Teresa Jorge Padua, President of Brazil's
environmental protection agency. Seated to the President's right
was Jacques Cousteau, the noted French oceanographer at a
rectangular table. The President ignored questions shouted from
the press, such as "Is this how you like to spend your birthday?"

DINNER AT THE PALACE:
No news, little color in an event that began with the least
secure motorcade on record. Taxi cabs, vans, motorcyclists and
anyone else with a whim to do so cut into the motorcade, passed
it, probably waving to the President as they zoomed by.
Eventually, we arrived at an enormous palace atop a mountain
called "the Orange Palace," which is used for official visitor
events. Very ornate, with marble, fountains, winding staircases,
all that.
Bush spotted atop a balcony, blowing his nose. Asked if he was
still bothered by the tear gas, he flashed a look of exasperation
at your pool and said no. Group of dignataries that included
Skinner, Scowcroft, Aronson, came down steps where cameras were
ready, followed by the Bushes and the Collors. Much flashing of
cameras. No talk. Into dinner and pool shown the door, to hover
out on the grass.
