JENCKES V SUBJECT: Unsolicited comments regarding the Republican Convention MORGAN Dole will do well in North Carolina because of his wife. (She is from that state) FANNIN Supports the ticket. Dole is a good choice. GOLDWATER Would hate to see Dole as President; but, Mondale would be worse as President. McCLURE Supports Dole. DOMENICI Supports Dole, but has anyone ever heard of him. BEALL Ticket is a real plus. Doesn't see how anyone can complain. H.SCOTT Ticket better than most. Would have preferred Ruckelshaus. MANSFIELD Thought outcome "fine" (has followed President's race closely). Says Dole will be a "slasher". Please have Senator Dole read this same material off camera as a wild-track. DOLE: (Not yet shot) There are those who think the federal government should come in and impose land use regulations in every state. President Ford and I are totally opposed to that. We think the land use regulations should be made at the local and state levels close to home, so you can have a closer, stronger voice in what people are doing with your resources. After all, it's the farmer himself who decides his fate in our system. That's why it works. That's why it's been so fantastically productive. A free, competitive man in a free, competitive market.
