DAV OMD SUBJECT: Meeting of Egyptian Parliamentarian Dr. Layla Takla with Mrs. Ford We understand that a meeting has been arranged for an Egyptian Parliamentarian, Dr. Layla Takla, who is now attending the United Nations General Assembly, to meet with Mrs. Ford in January. Dr. Takla has called to tell us that she has been in contact with Nancy Howe, who on Saturday tentatively confirmed an appointment for 1:00 p.m., January 14. She also requested that she be sent whatever biographic material on Mrs. Ford that may be available. Dr. Takla will be leaving for California during the next few days to visit her sister, but she has asked that mail be sent to her c/o Mr. Ibrahim Bedawi at the Egyptian Mission to the United Nations, 36 East 67th Street, New York City. For your information, a biography of Dr. Takla is attached. DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12356, Sec. 3.4 (b) White House Guide Lines, Feb. 24, 1983 By WHD NARS, Date 12/16/83 MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE ACTION 110 - Add-on WASHINGTON CONFIDENTIAL January 13, 1975 MEMORANDUM FOR: MRS. FORD THROUGH: SUSAN PORTER FROM: BRENT SCOWCROFT Bo SUBJECT: Your Meeting with Egyptian Parliamentarian, Dr. Layla Takla - Tuesday, January 14, 1975, at 1:00 p.m. Although Dr. Layla Takla is a foreigner, she received her graduate education in the United States and has lived here for an extended period of time. Her understanding of the United States and of Americans is, consequently, considerably deeper than would be the case of a sometime visitor. This autumn she attended the United Nations General Assembly as one of four non-permanent Egyptian Representatives, and has just returned from California where she has been visiting her sister, a Professor of African Studies at California State University in Los Angeles. Dr. Takla intends to leave for Cairo within the next few days and expects to see both President and Mrs. Sadat after her return there. A biographic note on Dr. Takla is attached. You may wish to use the following talking points during your meeting with Dr. Takla: --It is a pleasure to welcome you to Washington. I have had little opportunity to meet with visitors from the Middle East, and in a sense this is a first occasion for me. You, of course, are deeply familiar with this country. Now that you are a public figure in Egypt do you retain the same perspective of the United States as you did when you were a student in New York? --I am pleased at the warmth of the American/Egyptian relationship that has developed over the past year, and am confident it will continue. I have noted your position as an Egyptian Parliamentarian and Mrs. Sadat's deep interest in the role of women in her country. I'd be interested in your views. DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12356, Sec. 3.4 (b) CONFIDENTIAL White House Guide Lines, Feb. 24, 1983 By DAW NARS, Date 12/16/83 GERALD FORD CONFIDENTIAL - 2 - LIBRARY --I also look forward to seeing Mrs. Sadat when it is possible for her to visit the United States. [NOTE: The President has invited the Sadats to visit Washington at a time to be mutually determined. There is no firm date now. ] Her wishes for my recovery from my illness some months ago were received with appreciation. Please convey to her my warmest personal wishes.
