JOHN PAUL STEVENS AS ASSOCIATE JUSTICE
OF THE SUPREME COURT
Friday - December 19, 1975

BACKGROUND:
You will participate in the ceremony to swear in Circuit Judge John Paul
Stevens as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
In addition to the Justices of the Supreme Court, the ceremony will be
attended by approximately 150 special guests including Members of Congress
and the Administration.
You nominated Judge Stevens on November 28, 1975. He was confirmed by
the Senate December 17, 1975, by a vote of 98 to 0.
Your participation in the ceremony, which is described in detail in the
sequence, is brief and pro forma. Following the ceremony, you will take
part in a,press photo session with Chief Justice Burger and Justice Stevens,
and wives, then attend a reception for 150 guests.
SEQUENCE
9:45 a. m.
You and Mrs. Ford board motorcade on
South Grounds and depart en route Supreme
Court Building.
9:55 a. m.
Motorcade arrives Supreme Court Building
(Basement entrance) where you will be met
by Mr. Frank M. Hepler, Marshal of the
Court.
9:57 a. m.
You proceed to holding room. Mrs. Ford
will be escorted to the courtroom where she
will join Mrs. Burger and Mrs. Stevens.
9:59 a. m.
You enter courtroom and take your seat at the
Government Counsel's table, first seat to the
right of the podium. Attorney General Levi
and Solicitor General Bork will be to your right.
NOTE:
Justice-designate Stevens will be
sitting in the well of the courtroom
next to the Clerk of the Court.
10:00 a. m.
Supreme Court Justices enter the
Courtroom and are seated.
10:01 a. m.
Chief Justice Burger opens the special
sitting of the Court and recognizes you.
10:02 a.m.
You rise and move to the podium immediately
to your left to make your statement.
NOTE:
Single speech card enclosed.

Statement concludes. Return to your seat.
Chief Justice Burger recognizes
Attorney General Levi.
Attorney General Levi moves that
the Clerk read the Commission and
that it be made part of the Permanent
Record of the Court.
Clerk of Court reads the Commission.
Justice Stevens is escorted to the
center of the bench.
Chief Justice Burger administers the
Oath of Office to Justice Stevens.
All stand.
Justice Stevens puts on his robe and
is escorted to his seat on the bench.
Chief Justice Burger welcomes
Justice Stevens.
New Circuit Order is read.
Court is adjourned.
10:14 a.m.
Escorted by Frank Hepler, you join Mrs. Ford,
Mrs. Burger, and Mrs. Stevens and, together,
exit the courtroom to join the Chief Justice
and Justice Stevens.
10:15 a.m.
Proceed to the West Conference Room for
photo session, first with you, the Chief Justice,
and Justice Stevens; then shortly thereafter
to be joined by the wives.
