Dear Mrs. Ford:
First, I want to identify myself. I am Phil Buchen's
secretary. He and Bunny have spoken so much of you that
I really feel I know you myself. I have wanted many times
to write a note to let you know how we appreciate your
warm personality and your generosity to the staff (and also
that of your husband), but felt I didn't want to impose on your
time. My husband and I were privileged to be included in
the reception you and the President gave on August 23, 1974,
and wanted you to know how much we enjoyed the evening.
You have been in our prayers, and we are so pleased that
you have recovered so beautifully. I can well understand how
your back can flare up. I suffered for a year and a half with
mine -- hardly able to walk -- and finally had surgery. I'm
just fine now. I know how miserable you can be. We will
continue to pray for the recovery of your back also.
And now I want to tell you of someone I feel sure you will
remember -- Vicki Chern. Vicki is a lovely girl -- 27 years
old -- who made application to work on your staff, but it is
my understanding that you had already selected your staff
when you received her resume.
She met you at your home in Alexandria when she was News
Director for USIA and spent the afternoon doing a filming.
She told me that at a press dinner a few weeks later you recognized
her and came over for a chat. She was so very pleased that you
would remember her.

I had a phone call from a mutual friend yesterday afternoon
who said Vicki was on the operating table at that precise
moment having a breast removed. If you might remember
her and have the time, I know how much it would mean to
her to have some word from you. She is in Room 3116-E
at George Washington Hospital. I talked again to our friend
last night and he said she was really doing fine. Then I
called Vicki this afternoon, and she really sounds wonderful
and said she is feeling pretty well.
Thanks so much for the good feeling you have brought back
to the White House. Our very best to you and your wonderful
family.
Sincerely,
