Cannon Files at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 1, 1976 MEETING WITH GOVERNOR DANIEL EVANS (R-WASHINGTON) Friday, July 2, 1976 1:45 p.m. (10 minutes) Oval Office From: Jim Cannon I. PURPOSE Governor Evans will be in town and would like to meet with you to discuss two subjects: "The Alpine Lakes" and politics. II. BACKGROUND, PARTICIPANTS AND PRESS PLAN A. Background: The Governor has a strong interest in "The Alpine Lakes," (HR 7792), a bill which would create a wilderness in the Cascade Mountains of some 392,000 acres. The Department of Agriculture (Forest Service) presently owns most of this land. However, there are some private "in holdings" held by the major timber companies. This bill has cleared the House and the Senate and is on its way to you for action. The Governor is concerned because the bill received adverse testimony from the Forest Service before the Senate. The main issues for the Forest Service are ones of the size of the appropriation ($57 million) and its time frame (3 years). The Governor will ask you to sign the bill as it and not to veto it. B. Participants: Governor Daniel Evans (R-Washington). Staff: Jim Cannon C. Press Plan: To be announced. III. TALKING POINTS 1. I am glad that we have this opportunity to sit down and talk. I understand that you are in town for some meetings today and then you will be going to Hershey, Pennsylvania, for the Governor's Conference. What kind of a meeting do you expect in Hershey?
