On the sixty-sixth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of
America, I am proud to commend each of you and
your dedicated leaders on your valuable service to
our country.
My own lifelong involvement in the Scouting move-
ment convinces me that it is one of the strongest
forces in building character, developing self-
reliance and forming ties of friendship that enrich
the lives of all who participate in it.
As we celebrate our nation's two hundredth birthday,
we can look with the greatest satisfaction to the posi-
tive influence of Scouting on our national vitality and
well-being. It is to the credit of many fine religious,
educational and community organizations and dedi-
cated volunteers that we have a Scouting program that
has become such an important source of national
strength and such a useful stepping stone for count-
less youngsters on the road to responsible adulthood
and greater personal self-fulfillment.
I know that I am joined by all my fellow citizens in
a special Bicentennial salute to the Boy Scouts of
America for the pride and confidence they bring to
their families, their communities and our country.
