THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON April 27, 1976 Dear Mr. President: On behalf of the American people, I offer my warm- est congratulations to you and your fellow citizens on the occasion of the twenty-eighth anniversary of the independence of Israel. This friendship has matured and deepened through our common striving over the years to help advance a final peace in the Middle East. It has been reinforced by our admiration for the cultural and scientific genius of the Israeli people and for their dedication to democracy. The United States remains firmly committed to the existence and security of Israel and to efforts to contribute to the achievement of a just and enduring peace in your region. The courage and conviction of the people of Israel provide your country with a spe- cial strength in the search for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
