As we pay tribute to\nour military dead, we must do more than applaud\ntheir legendary courage; we must rededicate our-\nselves to the heritage of freedom for which they\ngave their lives. By acting in a way that reflects\ncredit on their patriotism, we can honor their\nmemory and extend that heritage to future genera-\ntions.\nOn this Memorial Day our defenses are strong, and\nwe are more determined than ever to keep them\nstrong; not strong for the sake of war -- but strong\nfor the sake of peace. A grateful nation, rejoicing\nin two hundred years of freedom and independence,\nwe salute our Armed Forces -- past and present --\nand acknowledge their inspiring contribution to our\nnational security and way of life,\nHerald R.
