I. I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME THE NATIONAL
REPUBLICAN HERITAGE GROUPS COUNCIL WHICH REPRESENTS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

2. OUR PARTY SEEKS UNITY IN DIVERSITY. YOU ARE
HEIRS OF THE RICH DIVERSITY BROUGHT TO AMERICA FROM MANY
NATIONS.
ALL AMERICANS ARE THE DESCENDENTS OF FORMER
IMMIGRANTS, BUT THE HERITAGE GROUPS COUNCIL INCLUDES THOSE
WHO MAINTAINED THEIR ETHNIC AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS.

3. I KNOW THE STRENGTH AND CHARACTER OF HERITAGE
GROUPS.
DESCENDENTS OF IMMIGRANTS FROM HOLLAND HAVE
CONTRIBUTED GREATLY -- AND STILL DO -- TO THE FIFTH DISTRICT OF
MICHIGAN WHICH I REPRESENTED IN THE CONGRESS FOR TWENTY-
FIVE YEARS.

IN FACT, THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF OTHER ETHNIC AMERICANS ACROSS
THIS NATION HAVE SHAPED THE NATION FOR THE BETTER.

4. I URGE YOU TO HELP RESETTLE THE VIETNAM REFUGEES.
MANY OF YOU KNOW THE PROBLEMS THESE REFUGEES FACE BECAUSE OF
PERSONAL AND FAMILY EXPERIENCE.
FOR VIETNAMESE REFUGEES,
ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW LIFE, A NEW LANGUAGE AND PREJUDICE
COMBINES WITH THE LOSS OF FAMILY TIES, JOBS AND HOMES.

5. ACROSS AMERICA, GOVERNORS AND MAYORS AND
PRIVATE CITIZENS HAVE JOINED IN TRYING TO MAKE THESE NEW
ARRIVALS WELCOME.
THEY HAVE OPENED THEIR HEARTS AND THEIR
HOMES TO THESE REFUGEES.
THEY ARE TO BE COMMENDED.

THE VIETNAMESE WANT ONLY A HAND UP AT THIS TIME -- NOT A
HAND OUT.
JOIN ME IN REACHING OUT TO THESE NEWCOMERS
WHO CHOSE FREEDOM.

6. THE SPIRIT OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY -- -- OUR
TRADITIONAL FAITH IN THE IMPORTANCE OF HELPING OTHERS TO HELP
THEMSELVES MUST BE REASSERTED.
I STILL BELIEVE MOST
AMERICANS SUBSCRIBE TO THE INSCRIPTION ON THE STATUE OF
LIBERTY, WHICH READS:

YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE
THE WRETCHED REFUSE OF YOUR TEEMING SHORE,
SEND THESE, THE HOMELESS, TEMPEST-TOSSED, TO ME:
I LIFT MY LAMP BESIDE THE GOLDEN DOOR.

7. WHAT DISTINGUISHES AMERICA IS THE OPPORTUNITY
"FOR LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS."
IF WE
FORGET THIS, WE WILL HAVE LOST SOMETHING VERY PRECIOUS.
FOR WE ARE A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS.

AFTER WORLD WAR II, THE UNITED STATES OFFERED A NEW LIFE TO
MORE THAN ONE-HALF MILLION DISPLACED PERSONS.
THE
GENEROSITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOWED AGAIN FOLLOWING THE
HUNGARIAN UPRISING OF 1956 WHEN MORE THAN THIRTY THOUSAND
HUNGARIAN REFUGEES FLED HERE FOR SANCTUARY.

8. RESENTMENT TOWARD THE VIETNAMESE HAS BEEN
REPUDIATED BY MILLIONS WHO BELIEVE IN AMERICA.
OUR
BEAUTIFUL LAND MUST BE MATCHED BY THE BEAUTY AND GOODNESS
OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
A NATION THRIVES ON ITS PRACTICES - --
NOT ITS PREACHINGS.
LET US RESPOND TO THESE NEW REFUGEES
IN LINE WITH OUR OLD TRADITIONS.
