FORD LIBHANA reason for name: it was the championship (city and state) South High Football Team (grand rapids) in 1930 -- and the team had 30 members total. Total of 52 team members and wives are planning to attend as of Monday night. They have met every year since 1930 on Thanksgiving Day. It has always been a breakfast, usually about 9 a.m. They used to meet at Hattem's Restaurant in Grand Rapids (Mose Hattem was a cheerleader at South). His restaurant closed and they started meeting at the Pantlind Hotel about 1960. Their custom was to have only the team emembers at the breakfast, except for every five years, when each member would bring his wife and kids. Next year is the "five year¹¹ time, when the whole family will be included. How it got to the White House this year last Thanksgiving, Art Brown (secy-treas of group) talked to the President and said that the group had been talking, and they thought it would be a lot cheaper for the taxpayer if all of the 30-30 Club came to Washington instead of JF flying back to Grand Rapids (this was right at the time that there was a great deal of criticism being leveled for excess use of jet fuel for Presidential travel). JF said 'great!' and, since Fords still in Alexandria house, planned to have it at a hotel here. Then Congress started talking about the Damiral's House, and JF sent word that they'd love to have it there. Then, in August after he became President, he had someone on his staff call Art Brown and left the message 'not to worry -- the breakfast would still be held, but there'd have to be one change -- in the place it would be.' President of the group is Harold Bosscher of Rockford, Mich; VP of group is JF; treas is Art Brown. This is largest %age of members who've ever attended. Of the list, might want to note: -Clifford Gettings, Grand Rapids, who was coach in 1930 -Mr and Mrs. Edward Preston, who are coming from Johannesburg, South Africa Daniel P. Rose, who was asst coach -Silas McGee, ret. longshoreman who has been subject of interviews on West Coast (apparently, some doctors bought his ticket to D.C. and gave him money for new suit) note: they're arriving Natl Arprt 1:10 or 1:20 from GR Weds - press will be with & they don't care if D.C. media is aware 30 People on team state + city championship lgst 70 age of members - 26 (all that's left) Ha mose Hern's Restaur - Grand Rapids rest closed (Hattem was cheesleader at South) - agreed to open - Pantlind Hotel - 1960 1st time whole fam every 5 yrs Pres Fard of not there, he calls always been a break fast Ha. at a.m. Each person intro wife t tells what kids- rest social they've done year before & about Basscher Pres GREAT FORD JF V Pres Sery -ts art Brown haphezard elections on cheaper last thnksqiving - checked here pres ain -great then home- in that pay the wed love to have it had someone call t tell ant not to to come here aviat fuel worry, brkpt wed still be held, but have to make one change - august 29 are flying out of 6R weds am 1:10 or 1:20 p.m. - does not mind info being given out 6R pren be there ahead- chan 8 TV flying w/ FORD LIBRARY - Call Flower shop speak w/ Chuck Smith (he is assisting during holidays) also : Princess Rediving 401/593-7795 30-30 Club Brunch centerpieces: turkeys nade out of styrofoam about 15" high melted candle wax for the bill and red thing that hangs down eyes out of corsage pins sprayed antique gold (brownish) paint in baskets, on mats encircled by decorative gourds, purple grapes, cumquats orange pyracantha used (From Rex Scouten, 11/27/74 at 10:30 am) Thanksgiving Dinner Menu Roast Turkey with giblet gravy Bread stuffing Glazed chestnuts Cranberry sauce Mashed potatos Broccoli Green salad bowl Cherry pie ala mode Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown will be guests at dinner, tonght. and will be staying overnight. The team captain was Gerald Ford. Here's more on that story from John Cochran:" "They came from as far away as South Africa for the most memorable reunion the 1930 Grand Rapids South High team has ever had. Some brought wives and presents for the first family. Some did not. Silas McGee had enough trouble just getting the money for the trip from his home in San Francisco. But he was not about to miss seeing his old teammate, Jerry Ford." (NBC showed extensive footage on McGee) "Silas McGee always called Jerry Ford "juny" back in the days when Silas was all-city halfback and Juny was allstate Center on the undefeated Grand Rapids team" Cochran said. Over 61 now, but they are still in good shape, even though their hair is thinner and their midriffs thicker. After a FORD LIBRARY 3 leisurely brunch, which took more than two hours, President Ford's old teammates took a tour of the White House, and then came outside for a special picture taking session. "The idea was to try to duplicate a picture of Mr. Ford with three of his teammates, taken 44 years ago. And they came close to duplicating it (as film of the picture-taking was shown.) The people were all the same. Only the physiques have changed. But while others on the team may joke about their aches and pains now, Silas McGee says he is as great as ever. (Pictures of McGee showing how he carried the ball.) ------------ (ABC-2:10 minutes.) Howard K. Smith said Thanksgiving comes at troubled times for many. "At the White House, the man on whose desk the most trouble lands, the President set the tone by hosting his high school football team. ABC's Tom Jarriel reports:' Forty-four years ago they were the Michigan state high school championship football team. Today they assembled around their captain, Gerald Ford for the annual reunion of the 30-30 club. As 22 surviving members of the 30-man 1930 club posed for pictures and tossed the football around after brunch, a lot of the old team spirit was still evident. (Film of President talking with teammates and lining them up for picture.) "In disparaging moments, Lyndon Johnson used to accuse then House minority leader Ford of playing too much football without a helmet. What sort of football player was he?" McGee "He was a doggone good one -- the very best, very very best. " (McGee gave a detailed report on what a good player Gerry Ford was). "He always wore his football helmet," said McGee. "Any- one says he didn't, they got rocks in his head." ----- Jarriel said "Comedian Dick Gregory and three congress- men paced the cold sidewalk outside to protest what they called the Administration's lack of concern for the world's hungry."
