RE: Annual Christmas Party
Contact: Lorene Nagel 832-4400
Since this will probably be the last of Mrs. Fords many
visits to The Hospital for Sick Children, everyone was wearing
hearts-on-their-sleeves tucked into sprigs of holly for their
Annual Christmas Party. The Hospital, a special facility for
handicapped children, has been a favorite charity of Mrs. Ford's
long before she became First Lady. It has always enjoyed her
personal interest and concern.
The children, with a few helping hands, pasted together a
huge Christmas card, made like a book, from whose pages stepped
four year old Wassina Russell (a severe burn case) who was
supposed to say "Merry Christmas, Mrs. Ford". What Wassina
really said at her moment of glory only the reporter will know!
Also in tribute and farewell to long-time friend Betty Ford,
Dale Lowe, Administrator of The Hospital for Sick Children,
presented her with a placque in marquetry which read:
"To Betty Ford whose very special caring
for our little patients will be remembered
and cherished with deep affection."
FORD a. GENALD LIBRARY
In her usual at-home-here style The First Lady helped
serve the refreshments and assisted Santa Claus in reading the
names on all the gifts. No pack-on-the-back Santa this year - he
brought his gifts for 120 children by modern "Auto-train":
decorated laundry carts lashed together with Santa the engine.

The Annual Christmas Party is hosted by the Naval Ship
Engineering Center, so a real live Admiral Willis C. Barnes
was on hand to add the "brass" and not incidently present a
nice fat check to the President of The Board of Trustees of
The Hospital for Sick Children, Mr. Harrison Brand, III.
Special guests included members of the Hospital's Board
of Trustees and a delegation from the Admirals' Staff.
