Dr. Mildred Scheel
Dr. Mildred Scheel, wife of the President of the Federal Republic
of Germany, has been a resident of Bonn since 1969. No stranger
to the Rhineland, Dr. Scheel was born in Cologne, 30 kilometers
north of Bonn, the daughter of a physician and an American mother.
Prior to her marriage to Walter Scheel, Mildred Scheel lived
in Munich pursuing a medical career which she had decided on
while still a school girl. After graduating from secondary
school, she began her medical studies in Munich where she
accepted an appointment to a University medical clinic.
Following her father's footsteps, intending to eventually take
over his practice, Mildred Scheel specialized in radiology.
Long interested and active in the fight against cancer, Mildred
Scheel founded the Deutsche Krebshilfe (The German Cancer
Research Fund) shortly after the election of her husband to the
Presidency of the Federal Republic on the 15th of May 1974.
The Scheels have two daughters, Cornelia and Andrea-Gwendolyn,
and an adult son, Ulrich, from the President's previous marriage.
They also have an adopted Bolivian son, Simon-Martin.
While extremely interested and active in political matters,
Dr. Scheel manages to find time to pursue her interests in read-
ing, music, the theater and skiing. She is known as an excellent
hostess whose intelligence and natural grace are much admired.
The First Lady is not only well liked but regarded by those who
know her as a friend.

Dr. Mildred Scheel
Frau Dr. Mildred Scheel, die Gattin des Präsidenten der Bundes-
republik Deutschland, lebt seit 1969 in Bonn.
ihrer Zeit in Anspruch nimmt.
schaft entgegengebracht.

MEMORANDUM FOR:

FROM:

SUBJECT:
MRS. FORD'S PARTICIPATION IN THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT
TO BONN, GERMANY
Following our meetings and site surveys in the Bonn, Germany area
as well as a review of the President's schedule, I will propose
the following to Mrs. Ford.
1)
That she participate with the President in the arrival
ceremony on Sunday morning.
2)
Dependent upon answers received from Protocol, she join
Mrs. Schmidt following the ceremony for tea.
3)
That she depart via motorcade to return to Schloss Gymnich
for a private day.
4)
That she join the President for the courtesy call and
dinner aboard the boat on the Rhine.
I am also exploring the following options:
1)
That she consider joining the President on the visit
to Heidelburg.
2)
That she invite Mrs. John Sherman Cooper (Lorraine) to
join her for a liesurely lunch at the residence.
There is a possibility that Mrs. Scheel will want to host a luncheon
for Mrs. Ford which was a proposal under the original plan as presented
by the government at the host government meeting. We have several
tour type options available to add to her schedule should she SO desire.
My personal feeling is that the private day to permit her to adjust to
the time change and early ceremony will be best.
My contact for Mrs. Ford's schedule in Bonn is Gerald Monroe of the
Embassy staff. He will be working through Dewey.

FROM:
PETER SORUM
SUBJECT:
JACK FORD'S PARTICIP ATION IN THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT
TO BONN, GERMANY
Following our meetings and site surveys in the Bonn Germany area
as well as a review of the President's schedule, Iwill propose the
following to Jack Ford:
1)
That he participate in the dinner Sunday evening on
the Rhine.
2)
That, dependent upon Protocol and the desires of the
President, he not participate in the arrival ceremony
or the courtesy call.
3)
That he consider Joining the President on the trip to
Heidelburg.
4)
That he spend any social time on Saturday in Cologne
and Sunday in Bonn.
5)
That his visit with a Forcemeister be scheduled based
on his decisions on the above.
Larry Nelson, who has been assigned by the Embassy, will work through
Dewey, is exploring the possibilities for Jack's participation in an
orienteering contest as well as a "Folks Wander" where villages go out
into the forests and follow a prescribed course, which results in a
medal for the number of kilometers walked.
I have planned on Jack staying with his parents where he can jog on
the grounds. Ron Jackson through Wilbur Jones has asked about the
possibilities of weights being available at Gymnich. For additional
exercise or in case of rain, there are facilities at the Embassy Club.
