AL-SADAT\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nMONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1975\nPEARL BAILEY, one of America's best loved entertainers,\nwas raised in Washington, D.C. where her father was a\nminister. Following in the footsteps of her brother Bill,\nwho was famous for his tap-dancing, she began her own\nentertainment career in 1933 as a singer with various pop-\nular bands.\nMiss Bailey was with the first USO troupe during World\nWar II, and subsequently has entertained service men and\nwomen stationed around the world. She was presented the\nUSO Woman of the Year Award in 1969.\nPearl Bailey made her stage debut in St. Louis oman in\n1946. She then went on to star in a number of motion pic-\ntures including Carmen Jones, Porgy and Bess, and That\nCertain Feeling. However, of all her stage and screen roles,\nMiss Bailey is probably best known for Hello Dolly, the\nBroadway hit for which she won a special Tony Award. Fol-\nlowing this stage triumph, she won Cue magazine's Enter-\ntainer of the Year Award (1968).\nIn addition to being a much sought-after theater and night-\nclub performer, Miss Bailey is a highly successful recording\nartist and a popular guest on various television programs.\nShe is also the author of four books, including her autobi-\nography, Raw Pearl.\nPearl Bailey's career as a performer and goodwill ambassador\nfor America has gained her the affection of people all over\nthe world. The President may also\npresent a personal gift to you.\nThe President and Mrs. Sadat are planning to present\nthe \"Order of El Kemal\" to Mrs. Ford. Mentioned\nthat we understood from NSC that Sadat did not have any XXXXX particular\nlikes or dislikes (no penchants towards ballet, folk music, classical instrum-\nentalists, etc. ).\nMr. Matthews understands that also. He felt that this information probably\ncame from Arthur Houghton (of the NSC staff ??) who in the past was in our\nAmerican Embassy in Cairo and got to know Sadat's tastes fairly well.\nThe only notable point that Mr. Matthews wished to make was that for relaxation,\nXdaX Sadat loves to see Westerns. Also, in his past he used to be an avid\nreader of Zane Grey novels, and he spent most of his time in concentration\ncamps in Egypt in World War II reading these books. Johnny Cash is a dynamic eagle\nfigure, displaying truth and honesty and a perceptive awareness of the\nhuman condition, good and bad.\nThese are impressive pinnacles of accomplishment for the son of\nan Arkansas cotton farmer. Cash has come a long way through the\nyears, paying his dues as he went along. He was hauling water for\na road gang when he was ten, and pulling a nine foot cotton sack\nwhen he was twelve. He worked hard with his family to raise a crop\nof Arkansas cotton only to see the year's work washed away by the\nraging Mississippi River Floods. Cash and his family suffered greatly\nduring the depression, as did most Americans.\nBy the time Cash finished high school, America was embroiled in\nthe Korean conflict. He enlisted in the Air Force, and was assigned\nto Germany. Country music had always been an important part of\nCash's boyhood, and while in Germany, he bought his first guitar.\nAs a military cryptographer he was often alone. During these lonely\nhours, he read history, practiced his guitar, and wrote songs. It\nwas during this period in Germany that Johnny wrote one of his most\nimportant songs, \"Folsom Prison Blues\", the night he saw the film,\n\"Inside the Walls of Folsom Prisor\". Cash recalled, \"There wasn't\nmuch romance to the writing of \"Folsom Prison Blues\". I saw the movie,\nliked it, and wrote the song. That's all there was to that.\" The\nsong has since sold millions, and has served Cash well as a vocal\nsignature.\n( 69) Live at San GRADE Que LIBRARY\nat folson\n(-68)\nMOTION PICTURE - THEATRICAL AND CONCERT PRODUCTION\nLong, lined, yellow legal pads are always within reach of Cash.\nOn these pads, he jots song ideas, often sentences, sometime just\na word or two. He records observations about things he sees, remembers,\nabout people with whom he speaks. He may mull an idea for a month,\nor he may write the complete song in fifteen minutes.\nWhen the young Cash retruned to the States from Germany, he got\nmarried. He enrolled in radio school, hoping to become a country\nmusic disc jockey, but soon found he preferred performing. He had\nalways wanted to sing and believed that his future lay in music.\nHe made several fruitless overtures to the Sun Recording Company\n(then Memphis' only recording company), but his songs were too country\nfor the rock-oriented label. Finally, Sam Phillips of Sun Records\nlistened to him and agreed to record him. Cash and \"The Tennessee Two\",\nMarshall Grant and Luther Perkins, got together for those first sessions,\nand with the release of \"Cry, Cry, Cry\" and \"Hey Porter\" in June of 1955,\nthe Johnny Cash career was on its way.\nFinancial success was not long in coming for Johnny Cash. But\nlike his country predecessors, Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams,\nCash did not cope well with success. Cash is a shy and reticent man.\nEven though his records were hits, he was soon using pills to bolster\nhis confidence and to keep him going double time. Within a short time,\nhe was caught up in an endless circle of amphetamines and barbituates.\nHe spent more time on the road than at home. His first marriage went\non the rocks, and he seemed destined for the same end.\nBy the mid-sixties, Cash was one of country music's superstars,\nbut the whole country music community was anticipating his demise.\nThey knew about his \"no-shows\", they knew about his psychosomatic\nlaryngitis, but they hadn't anticipated June Carter. June had been\na part of the Johnny Cash Show since the early sixties and she knew\nhe was worth saving. In 1968, June enlisted the help of Dr. Nat Winston,\nthe former head of the Tennessee Department for Mental Health, and\na country music authority. Dr. Winston saw Cash and agreed to undertake\na long withdrawl with him. Cash knew that he must get himself together\nand cooperated, with successful and permanent results.\nDuring that time, Johnny came back to the Christian faith in\nwhich he was brought up, with a renewed dedication, and a few years\nof added wisdom gleaned from the hard times. In November, 1971, John\nand June took a film crew to Israel where he wrote and produced a\nfeature length film entitled \"Gospel Road\". This project was the end\nresult of the Cashs' dreams to tell the story of the life of Christ as\nthey envision it.]\nFORD\nLIBRARY\n-3-\n20th Century Fox distributed the film but most recently Billy Graham's\nWorld Wide Pictures of Burbank, California, purchased \"Gospel Road\"\nfor distribution. It is the most successful film the Graham organization\nhas ever been associated with.\nJohn's list of motion picture and TV credits is formidable.\nHe co-starred with Kirk Douglas in \"A Gunfight\" for Paramount Pictures\nand has guested and hosted on all of the top variety TV shows and\nplayed opposite Pete Falk in a top rated dramatic \"Columbo\" segment\nin March of 1974. A recent ABC-TV special \"Ridin the Rails\", depicting\nthe history of the American railroad, was a landmark in the documentary\nfield for not only its historical but entertainment value.\nJohnny Cash has recently been honored with a Doctorate of\nHumanities degree from Gardner Webb College in North Carolina, the\ndedication of The Retreat Mental Hospital in Decatur, Alabama, in\nhis name, and the Faith in Freedom Award by the Religious Heritage\nof America, Inc.\nCash still performs ten to twelve prison shows per year, along\nwith his television and concert committments, while enjoying a lasting\nrelationship with Columbia Records. He has just finished writing a\nbook about his experiences and philosophy of life, as well as his\nspiritual world; tentatively entitled \"Man in Black\", published in 1975\nby Zondervan.\nJohn purveys his philosophy thru his music to mass audiences\nbefore the camera and from the stage, but he also purveys it on a\none-to-one basis. He maintains enormous correspondence and telephone\ncommunication with individuals in every walk of life. Rather than\npreach it, he strives every day to practice the faith he believes in.\nJohnny Cash, the words he says and the songs he sings, are a\nlife style. Johnny Cash is as American as the songs the sings. He\nhas proven that any man can accomplish anything he makes up his mind\nto do. By using his great personal strength and innate musical ability,\nJohnny Cash has risen far above his dreams. He is happiest, and as\nhe says, \"only completely alive\" when he is performing, sharing with\nhis audience the songs he loves.\nThe past of Johnny Cash represents the toughest part of our\nlives.
