Let us, therefore,\nrededicate ourselves to the ideals of our own democratic heritage. In SO\ndoing, we manifest our belief that all men everywhere have the same\ninherent right to freedom that we enjoy today. In support of this\nsentiment, the Eighty-sixth Congress, by a joint resolution approved\nJuly 17, 1959 (73 Stat. 212), authorized and requested the President\nto proclaim the third week in July of each year as Captive Nations Week.\nNOW, THEREFORE, I, GERALD R. FORD, President of the\nUnited States of America, do hereby designate the week beginning\nJuly 13, 1975, as Captive Nations Week.\nI call upon the people of the United States to observe this week with\nappropriate ceremonies and activities, and I urge rededication to the\naspirations of all peoples for self-determination and liberty.\nIN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this\ntwenty-seventh day of June, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred\nBERALD FORD\nseventy-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America\nthe one hundred ninety-ninth.\nGerall R. Ford\nTHE UNITED PREST 3HL DO\nCaptive Nations Week, 1976\nBy the President of the United States of America\nA Proclamation\nThis year we mark the beginning of our third century as an independent nation.\nTwo hundred years ago our Declaration of Independence declared that \"all men are\ncreated equal.\" It did not say \"all Americans\" but embraced all men everywhere.\nThroughout our history we have repeatedly demonstrated our conviction and concern\nthat men and women throughout the world should share the full blessings of liberty.\nAs we celebrate our Bicentennial, it is important that we let the world know that\nAmerica still cares, that the torch in the Statue of Liberty still burns brightly. The\nworld should know that we stand for freedom and independence in 1976, just as we\nstood for freedom and independence in 1776.\nFor two centuries, the fundamental basis of American policy toward other nations\nhas remained unchanged: the United States supports the aspirations for freedom,\nindependence and national self-determination of all peoples. We do not accept foreign\ndomination over any nation.
