Digitized from Box 7 of the White House Press Releases at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 23, 1975 OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D. C. REMARKS OF THE VICE PRESIDENT AT THE SWEARING-IN CEREMONY, NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSIONERS, JOINT COMMITTEE HEARING ROOM S-407, THE CAPITOL WASHINGTON, D. C. No task before us has a higher priority than to assure that we have an adequate and economical supply of energy. On our success in that effort will depend our future security and well-being. The President has called for an all-out effort to develop and make use of all available energy sources. Nuclear energy has the demonstrated potential to make a vital contribution in these efforts. To realize that potential, however, we must be able to deal effectively with the safety and security aspects of nuclear energy through a sound regulatory process. And if the regulatory process is to be effective, both the public and regulated industry must be confident that these issues are being dealt with fairly, effectively, and in the national interest. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission which is being sworn in today has just such a challenging mandate. And, in the composition of the Commission, I have great confidence that its mission will be met. The men chosen by the President to head the new Commission; Chairman Anders; Dr. Gilinsky; Mr. Kennedy; Dr. Mason} and Mr. Rowden; -- bring to the task distinguished backgrounds in the sciences, government and law. This is an outstanding group, assigned a vital role -- at a time when expansion of this country's energy output is an absolute imperative. # # #
