THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced the reappointment of Benno C. Schmidt,
of New York, New York, to be a member of the President's Cancer
Panel for a term expiring February 20, 1978. The President also
re-designated Mr. Schmidt to serve as the Chairman of the Panel.
Mr. Schmidt has served as a member and Chairman since February
17, 19 72.
Mr. Schmidt joined the J.H. Whitney Company in 1946 as a Partner and
later became Managing Partner in 1959. He has combined his duties with
J.H.. Whitney Company along with serving as Chairman of the Board of
Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases and Vice Chairman of
the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. From 1945 to 1946 he was
General Counsel, Office of Foreign Liquidation Commissioner, Department
of State. He served in the Office of General Counsel of the War Production
Board in Washington, D.C. He was a Thayer Teaching Fellow at Harvard
Law School from 1940 to 1941. From 1936 to 1940 he was a member of the
faculty of the University of Texas Law School.
Mr. Schmidt was born on January 10, 1913 in Abilene, Texas. He received
his B.A. degree from the University of Texas. He also received his
L.H. D. degree from the New York Medical College.
Mr. Schmidt is married to the former Nancy Montgomery and they have
four children.
