THE WHITE HOUSE
The President today announced his intention to nominate three persons to
be members of the National Study Commission on Records and Documents
of Federal Officials. These are new positions. They are:
Herbert Brownell, of New York, New York, Senior
Partner, Lord, Day and Lord, New York, New York.
Lucius D. Battle, of the District of Columbia, Senior
Vice President, Communications Satellite Corporation
(COMSAT), Washington, D.C.
Ernest R. May, of Belmont, Massachusetts, Professor
of History, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts,
The President today also announced the appointment of Philip W. Buchen,
Counsel to the President, as a member of the Commission.
The President also announced his intention to designate Mr. Brownell
as Chairman of the Commission upon his confirmation by the Senate.
The Commission members shall serve for the life of the Commission.
The Commission was established by the Presidential Recordings and
Materials Preservation Act of December 19, 1974, Public Law 93-526
for the purpose of studying problems and questions with respect to the
control, disposition, and preservation of records and documents produced
by or on behalf of Federal officials, with a view toward the development
of appropriate legislative recommendations and other recommendations
regarding appropriate rules and procedures with respect to such control,
disposition, and preservation.
The Commission shall transmit to the President and to each House of the
Congress a report not later than March 31, 1976 and cease to exist 60
days thereafter.
