POOL REPORT
Andrews AFB - Detroit
October 10
1975
After an uneventful takeoff in overcast at 2:12 pm, Nessen
came back to report the following:
The President's opening statement at the news conference will
deal with grain, "but not in the way you think." He denied
that the President will announce a grain deal with the USSR.
The President's meeting with Norwegian King Olaf lasted 40
minutes, dealt with 150th anniversary of Norwegian immigration,
plus exchange of greetings.
President's meeting with Portugese Foreign Minister Nelo Antunes
and Portugese Ambassador Joao Hill Themido lasted 45 minutes,
was also attended by Secretary Kissinger and General Scowcroft.
Meeting was a continuation of "high level consultations" begun
last October when Portugese President Francisco Costa Gomes
visited Washington. Meeting consisted of a general review
of US-Portugese relations. On the current situation in
Portugal, discussed Portugese needs for US aid, plus relief
and resettlement assistance for Angolan refugees. President
told Antunes Administration will send Congress a proposed
assistance program which will include (ON BACKGROUND)
$55 million in fiscal 1976 ($35 millionfor immediate relief,
$20 million in long-term assistance. Also agree to double
U.S. airlift from Angola, starting October 14. (ALL THE
PORTUGESE MEETING WAS REPORTED AT WHITE HOUSE BY LARRY SPEAKS.)
Riding on Air Force One were Mrs. Ford and the following
Michigan Republicans: Senator and Mrs. Robert P. Griffin and
Reps. Garry Brown, Ed Hutchinson (and Mrs.); Guy Vander Jage
(and Mrs.); Marvin Esch (and Mrs.) and MRS. Al Cederberg.
Staffers on Air Force One: Seidman, Cheney, Hartmann, Nessen,
James Connor.
Asked if President plans other stops in Europe, Nessen replied:
"I don't have anything on that," then said the President
"has to get back in time to leave" (for China?)
