Ford Presidential Library FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 29, 1976 Office of the White House Press Secretary THE WHITE HOUSE The President today announced his intention to nominate Robert Nelson Smith, of Toledo, Ohio, to be Assistant Secretary of Defense. His area of responsibility will be Health Affairs. He will succeed James R. Cowan who resigned effective March 1, 1976. Dr. Smith is in the practice of anesthesiology. Born on April 2, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Smith received his B. S. degree from the United States Military Academy in 1943 and his M. S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945. He was awarded his M. D. from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1952. He served in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1948. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and was Pre sident of the Ohio State Medical Association during 1969 to 1970. Dr. Smith resides in Toledo, Ohio. # # #
