POOL' : NO. 3-- DOWN ON THE FARM
The President met Marshall King, the farmer, at the corner of a corn
field and together they strolled through the field and stopped at the end
of several rows of still un-picked corn. They waited for 2 mechanical
pickers to approach them, one of them being a 6 row picker and sheller,
the other being a 4 row picker.
After the demonst ration, the President and King went over to the King farm
and the President inspected the farm lot, saw a demonstration of shelled corn
being elevated into a crib, and because of the stiff breeze blowing, got
chaff and dust in his eyes. He and King then inspected parts of King's cattle
herd, consisting of Black Angus and Heferds. While they were looking at the
cattle, the President mentioned to King that he had approved an increase in
grain price supports this week.
Said King: "I was very glad to hear that. I know a lot will say it's political,
but every little bit helps. 11 The President was introduced to the other
members of the King family, including Marshall's wife, Alice, and their
three daughters and two sons. They entered the white frame farmhouse
to sit down for a lunch of home-grown roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy,
home-grown corn, cole slaw, homemade rolls, pumpkin pie and coffee.
