Digitized from Box 34 of the White House Press Releases at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library October 31, 1976 POSTSCRIPT TO BUFFALO POOL REPORT Since the report was issued, I have learned that the Bishop Head letter on abortion read in St. Stanislaus Church this morning was also read in every Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Buffalo, comprising eight Western New York counties and with a membership of about 1 million Catholics. I have also learned that in some of the diocese's church bulletins, including St. Amelia's, Town of Tonawanda, a rating on political candidates was printed from the Office of Pro-Life Activity of the Diocese of Buffalo. Pertinent excerpts from these ratings: Rating AA -- support of the human life amendment to the Constitu- tion, prohibiting abortion except when a mother's life is in danger. Some local candidates listed, but no nationally known ones. Rating B -- those who favor some form of U.S. constitutional amend- ment on abortion, but in a weaker form than the "human life" amend- ment. Again some local candidates made it, but no national ones. Rating BB -- those who favor a states rights amendment permitting the states to outlaw or okay abortion as they see fit (my paraphrase): President Ford is on the BB list. Rating ZZ -- those who do not support the human life amendment: Carter, Moynihan and Eugene McCarthy. Lucian Warren - Buffalo News # # #
