Your Majesty:
I want to convey to you my very warmest greetings
and to tell you how much I am looking forward to my
discussions with you during your visit April 29.
In the interim, I want to assure you that we are
acutely conscious of the fact that the United States
continues to be the only power which is in a position
to help assure progress toward peace in the Middle East.
You have my pledge that this continues to be our goal.
The purpose of our continuing reassessment is not to

determine whether we should remain engaged in the
peacemaking process, but rather to decide on how best
we should proceed.
The issues we are considering are extremely complex
and sensitive, and I have therefore asked Ambassador

supply relationship.
I know of your great concern for your country in the
event of a further conflict in the Middle East. We are
doing all we can to insure that such a conflict does not

The Secretary has recommended [Tab B] that the President send a
message to King Hussein following the visit of Crown Prince Hassan.
At Tab A is State's formal request for White House clearance on the
proposed message, which has already been cleared by the Secretary.
You will note that the last paragraph of the Presidential message
mentions the King's March visit. The scheduling office (Nicholson)
has indicated today that the schedule proposal which you signed for a
March 25 date has been finally approved and the visit will be locked
into the President's calendar.
RECOMMENDATION: That the message at Tab A be cleared as is.

THE WHITE HOUSE
SUBJECT: Proposed Message from the
President to King Hussein
Secretary Kissinger requests that the attached
Presidential message concerning Jordan's role in the
Middle East peacemaking process be transmitted to
Embassy Amman for delivery to King Hussein.
In his breakfast conversation with the Secretary
on December 9, Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan commented
on the need for us to stay in close touch with the
King regarding future Middle East settlement efforts
and Jordan's possible role in those efforts. The
Secretary told Hassan we would send a message on this
subject to the King. He has now supplied the text of
that message, which he recommends be sent by the
President to King Hussein.
