Sters October 18, 2001 Commissioner President George W. Bush The White House max Iminate Grey (b)(6) Washington, DC 20500 Dear President Bush: As the NBA season tips off on Tuesday, October 30th, we are planning a league- wide tribute to salute the victims and heroes of September 11th. We would be greatly honored if you would join us in making this tribute a true symbol of strength, unity and patriotism for the American people. The NBA is producing a short video honoring the victims, celebrating the heroes and applauding the resilience of our nation, that will be presented during 8 special pre- game ceremony at every NBA arena prior to the first home game of the 2001-2002 season. As we acknowledge the pain, heroism - and leadership - that this tragedy has brought to the American public, we would be grateful if the video could include a brief message from you as additional support and inspiration to all. Additionally, we would like to invite you and the First Lady to attend the Washington Wizards home-opener on Saturday, November 3rd and be on hand at the MCI Center to participate in the commemorative ceremony and enjoy watching Michael Jordan play his first home game as a Washington Wizard. We realize that during this critical time in our nation that you have a very demanding schedule and basketball is obviously not a priority. As you have mentioned during these last few weeks it is important for the American people to return to their everyday lives and OUI hope is that the game of basketball can help in some small way. Once again, we would be honored if you could be a part of our league-wide tribute and would be happy to handle all necessary arrangements to make it convenient. Thanks for your time and consideration. Warm personal regards. On February 6, 1921, the Yankees issued a press release to announce the purchase of 10 acres of property in the west Bronx. The land, purchased from the estate of William Waldorf Astor for $675,000, sat directly across the Harlem River from the Yankees' current Manhattan home, the Polo Grounds, which they shared unhappily with the landlord Giants of the National League since 1913. The relationship between the Giants and their tenant crumbled after the 1920 season when Yankee attendance boosted by their new slugging sensation doubled to 1,289,422. That was over 100,000 more than the Giants, who, in 1921, notified the Yankees to vacate the Polo Grounds as soon as possible. With their departure from the Polo Grounds now inevitable, Yankee co-owners Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast l'Hommedieu Huston set out to build a spectacular ballpark of their own, Baseball's first triple-decked structure. With an advertised capacity of 70,000, it would also be the first to be labeled a "stadium." Original plans of the architect the Osborne Engineering Company of Cleveland, Ohio had the Stadium triple-decked and roofed all the way around. An early press release, in fact, described the Yankees' new home as a field enclosed with towering embattlements, rendering the events inside "impenetrable to all human eyes, save those of aviators." But the initial, grand design was quickly scaled back with the triple-decked grandstand not reaching either foul pole. Contrary to the owners' wishes, the action would be more than visible from the elevated trains that passed by the outfield as well as from the buildings that would spring up across River Avenue. Fortunately, a purely decorative element also survived the project's early downsizing and would become the park's most recognizable feature. A 15-foot deep copper facade would adorn the front of the roof which covered much of the Stadium's third deck. It would 1 of 4 10/25/2001 6:37 PM New York Yankees Ballpark wysiwyg://89/http://yankees.mlb.co./ballpark/ny_ballpark_history.jsp give Yankee Stadium an air of dignity that no park has possessed -- either before or since. The new stadium would favor lefthanded power with the right-field foul pole only 295 feet from home plate (though it would shoot out to 429 by right center). Though the left-field pole measured only 281 feet from the plate, righthanded hitters were neutralized by a 395-foot left field and a whopping 460 to left center. It would also be friendly to patrons, boasting an unheard of "eight toilet rooms for men and as many for women scattered throughout the stands and bleachers." (When the Stadium was remodeled 50 years later, it included more than 50 restrooms.) The club's executive offices would be moved from midtown Manhattan and located between the main and mezzanine decks with an electric elevator connecting them with the main entrance. The construction contract was awarded to New York's White Construction Co. on May 5, 1922 with the edict that the job must be completed "at a definite price" ($2.5-million) and by Opening Day 1923. Incredibly, it was. In only 284 working days, Yankee Stadium was ready for its inaugural game on April 18, 1923 vs. the Boston Red Sox. Officially, 74,200 fans packed Yankee Stadium for their first glimpse of Baseball's grandest facility while thousands more milled around outside after the fire department finally ordered the gates closed. Before the game began, John Phillip Sousa and the Seventh Regiment Band led both clubs to the flagpole in deep center field where the American flag and the Yankees' 1922 pennant were raised. Appropriately, Babe Ruth christened his new home with a three-run homer to cap a four-run third inning as the Yankees coasted to a 4-1 win. Because it was widely recognized that Ruth's tremendous drawing power made the new stadium possible, it would immediately become known as "The House That Ruth Built." Later that season, the Stadium hosted the first of 33 World Series and the Yankees won their first World Championship over their former landlord, the Giants. Of course, as the Stadium became the stage for a staggering number of World titles-now totaling 25-it also would become known as "The Home of Champions." In its early years, when wooden bleachers surrounded the outfield, a grass slope approached the outfield walls from foul pole to foul pole. Outfielders, especially Ruth in right, routinely backed up the small hill to pull down fly balls. Atop the bleachers were advertising signs except for a lone, manually operated, wooden scoreboard in right-center field which was "big enough to record 12 innings for games played by every club in the two major leagues." Over the years, the board would be replaced by more modern models. The Yankees, in fact, would unveil the first electronic message board in 1959. By 1928, the Stadium was ready for its first major facelift as the triple-deck grandstand in left field was extended beyond the foul pole to its current termination point. The right-field grandstand was extended in 1937, allowing "upper-deck" home runs in both directions. With the '37 expansion of the grandstand, the remaining wooden bleachers were replaced by a concrete structure and the distance to center field dropped from 490 feet to a still-astronomical 461 feet. Except for the addition of lights in 1946, the look of Yankee Stadium would now remain relatively the same until the winter of 1966-67. Then, under the direction of its new owner, CBS, the 44-year-old facility received a $1.5-million modernization, most of which was spent on paint (90 tons of it). The brown concrete exterior was painted white as was the by-now greenish copper facade. And all of the grandstand seats went from green to blue, 2 of 4 10/25/2001 6:37 PM New York Yankees Ballpark wysiwyg://89/http://yankees.mlb.co.r/balpark/nyy_ballpark_history.jsp a color scheme that would be retained when the Stadium was completely remodeled after the 1973 season. On August 8, 1972, after years of debate about the future of the aging ballpark, the Yankees signed a 30-year lease with the City of New York which called for Yankee Stadium to be completely modernized in time for the 1976 season. After completing the Stadium's 50th-Anniversary season in 1973, the Yankees moved to Shea Stadium for two seasons while their home was almost completely demolished and then rebuilt. The most striking change of the modernization would be the removal of the numerous, obstructive steel columns which supported the second and third decks as well as the roof. By "cantilevering" the upper decks and by lowering the playing field while increasing the slope of the lower stands, sight lines for fans would be dramatically improved. Of course, with the removal of the original roof, the Stadium almost lost its most-recognizable feature: the facade. But an innovative design concept included an exact replica of the facade atop the new 560-foot-long scoreboard which stretched across the rear of the bleachers. The board would also include baseball's first "telescreen," which could provide instant replays of the action by emplying a then-incredible "nine shades of gray." Yankee Stadium's exterior changed dramatically, too, as three escalator towers were added, one at each of the Stadium's three entrances. And, with 10 additional rows of seats added to the upper deck, the already-grand Stadium would have an even more majestic look. The remodeled Yankee Stadium opened on April 15, 1976 with the Yankees topping Minnesota 11-4 and, like its predecessor, would host the World Series in its inaugural season. The Stadium, in fact, hosted the Fall Classic in its first three seasons with the Yankees winning back-to-back World titles in 1977 and 1978. As one of the world's most-prestigious addresses, Yankee Stadium has also been the home of scores of other sports, entertainment and cultural events. While the Yankees were on the road or out of season, the Stadium opened its gates to college and pro football, soccer, political assemblies, religious conventions, concerts and even the circus. Boxing immediately found a home at Yankee Stadium with Benny Leonard winning a 15-round decision over Lou Tendler for the lightweight title three months after the gates opened on July 24, 1923. Until Mohamud Ali stopped Ken Norton on September 28, 1976, thirty championship fights have been fought at the Stadium, perhaps none more memorable than the one for the heavyweight title between Joe Louis and Germany's Max Schmeling on June 22, 1938. After suffering a knockout loss in the initial non-title encounter at the Stadium two years earlier, Louis now the heavyweight champ avenged his defeat with a stunning first-round KO in the rematch. Football also became an immediate fixture at Yankee Stadium with the 1923 Army-Navy game inaugurating a rich history of collegiate and later professional football matchups. On November 12, 1928, with Notre Dame and Army locked in a scoreless game at halftime, the legendary Knute Rockne made his famous "win one for the Gipper" pep talk and the Fighting Irish went out and beat the Cadets, 12-6. The New York football Giants also called Yankee Stadium home from 1956 through 1973 and, on December 28, 1958, played in what is widely recognized as "the greatest game ever played." With the NFL championship at stake, a crowd of 64,185 watched the 3 of 4 10/25/2001 6:37 PM - New York Yankees Ballpark wysiwyg://89/http://yankees.mlb.co./ballpark/nyy_balpark_history.jisp Baltimore Colts tie the game 17-17 on a Steve Myrha field goal with seven seconds left. Eight minutes into professional football's first-ever "sudden-death" overtime period, the Colts' Alan Ameche crashed through from the one yard line, ending a contest that would help establish pro football as a major sport. The Stadium was also an important stop for religious conventions with the conventions of the Jehovah's Witnesses the major outside activity each year. Beginning in 1950, the convention attracted as many as 123,707 people in a single day far more than any other Stadium event. On October 4, 1965 with the Yankees out of the World Series for only the third time in 17 years the Stadium hosted an event of worldwide significance. During the first visit to North America by a Pope, Paul VI celebrated mass before a crowd in excess of 80,000. Fourteen years later, John Paul II also made Yankee Stadium a stop on his tour of the United States. George Washington asked the wife of a friend's nephew to stitch some cloth Jerome Holtzman Archive together. Resembling a pattern Washington and others had designed, Betsy Ross finished our first flag in the spring of 1776, just before the historic vote in Philadelphia. About 38 years later, while watching the British fire upon Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Key penned his most famous verse. Later put to music, the National Select a team GO Anthem pays homage to our flag and everything it represents and reflects in America. "Our flag was still there" has proved to be the watch phrase of freedom. No matter what comes our way, our flag will not yield. Think of the inspiring places our flag has flown -- the moon, Iwo Jima, on the uniforms of all of our armed forces here and abroad, on astronauts' sleeves -- and your understanding of its honor, its impact, only grows. The brave patriots working the rubble in NYC, 1 of 3 10/25/2001 6:38 PM Major_League Baseball News wysiwyg://93/http://www.mlb.com/NA..0010917_editorial_colstam_id-mlb many wearing flags, turned the tide of our emotions that fateful day when they raised our flag atop the smoldering steel of what was once the World Trade Center. In that one gesture, they reminded us all that this flag will not yield. "Our flag was still there" -- and so were they. This disaster showed us all what an American patriot is. She and he are people who risk their lives for anyone else at any time. No questions. All of us have watched the rescue workers dig through the debris, still in harm's way. What we didn't see as vividly on the news -- but can sense -- is the bravery of the flight attendants, the crew, the passengers, the workers in the WTC and the Pentagon, and obviously the firefighters, medical personnel and police. These last few groups are taught to run into the fire while we are running from the fire. They were entering the building while others were justifiably leaving. Every day, more workers and more Americans are wearing the flag. We are awestruck by their bravery. They make us proud to be Americans. Through these rescuers, our flag was still there. Commissioner Bud Selig and all of baseball wisely postponed playing regularly scheduled games for six days. Ninety-two games have been postponed until the first week of October. It must have been an extremely tough decision, but it was the right one. Even more important, he made the American flag a central part of baseball's return. The players will be wearing the flag on their jerseys and their caps for the rest of the season. Major League players, coaches and managers will now wear, overtly, what we all wear tacitly -- our flag. It serves as a tribute to the thousands who perished this week and to their families and friends. It also serves as a reminder to each of us that millions of others also have paid the highest price for our freedom, dating back to the 1770s. And it serves as a reminder that any of us might be called to pay the price of freedom. We hope that we can be as brave as the patriots setting the example in New York and Washington -- and in the struggle that diverted a crash to western Pennsylvania. Each fan attending a series-opening game on Monday or Tuesday will receive a flag to wave any time she or he wants, but particularly during the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America." Baseball in effect is putting the spotlight on a fitting, impromptu Flag Day. Who knows? The outpouring of patriotism measured by flags lining streets, in front of apartments and houses, waving from car and truck windows, worn as bandanas, on belts, as part of so many daily wardrobes, just might persuade McDonald's to consider reinstituting its policy. What's more, perhaps Flag Day will be moved to the month of September. (Since 1949, Flag Day has been celebrated June 14). This is an appropriate role for baseball. After all, it was during a World Series game in 1918 that history was made. After a long discussion about whether to play the World Series during World War I, baseball went ahead. During the traditional seventh-inning stretch, the local band played the National Anthem. It has preceded baseball games ever since, and every sport has followed the tradition. We don't know if "God Bless America" can replace "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" forever, but for now it can. Our flag was still there. Mr. Key knew his stuff. He saw it that night as he sat on the British warship that pounded Fort McHenry. The Fort did not yield -- that night or any night, and the Stars and Stripes have always flown overhead. It was clear to Key what this country stood for. Bravery is necessary as part of our mission to defend and extend freedom everywhere we can. Our flag has always stood for these things. The right to display our love of this country every day is a great honor. That is why everywhere we look these days, thankful Americans are finding their flags and putting them on. That is why baseball players will be wearing the flag. That is why Commissioner Selig and the clubs are presenting flags to the fans. Our flag was still there. Always will be. 2 of 3 10/25/2001 6:38 PM WorldSeries.com History wysiwyg://95/htp://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/ws/history/ws_recap_index.jsp FOX AND MLB.com Sun Our Flag Was POWERED BY Still There ATE Daily Diamondbacks VS. "We made far too many mistakes," said Glavine. "One thing we were good at all season was pitching and defense. You never want to give a team extra outs in an inning." While some series are won by hot hitters or hot pitchers, this one was significantly influenced by a hot manager. Brenly won the strategy battle by managing for a seven-game series and keeping his big guns, Johnson and Curt Schilling, on their regular five-day cycle. Atlanta's Bobby Cox went with just three starters. "We didn't have to do that," said Randy Johnson Johnson. "It's hard to do, whether you're Height: 6 10" a power pitcher or not. When Mark Grace had to Video Highlights: 56k 300k leave the game with a hamstring injury, Brenly sent left-handed pinch-hitter Durazo to face the left-handed Glavine. In keeping with Brenly's charmed run this year, he went with Durazo instead of right-handed hitter Greg Colbrunn because of Durazo's defense. Naturally, the result was game-winning offense. Talk about poetic justice. When Grace was signed as a free agent, Durazo lost the first-base job he coveted. When Grace went down with an injury Sunday night, Durazo homered to send Grace to his first World Series. Brenly was asked about his, well, luck. "I'm just fortunate to inherit this ballclub," said Brenly, who took over for Buck Showalter. "It's easy for things to turn out well when no matter who you send out there does something good to help you win a ballgame. It doesn't make me a genius or anything like that. "I refuse to take any credit for what's happened with this ballclub this year. They put their egos on the back burner and decided that as a unit we were going to try to go out and do something special. I kind of sat back and watched them." Brenly said this team's title is a testament to the unselfish attitudes of his players, particularly the ones who don't play every day. "It would have been easy, you see it happen all the time, guys that are relegated to the bench, they don't take it so well, they sit and pout," Brenly said. "These guys relished it. They may not have liked being a bench player, but they took their role seriously." Johnson, who was overpowering in a Game 1 three-hit shutout, wasn't the same pitcher in Game 5. But with the game on the line in the seventh, he faced seven Braves and allowed only one to score, ending it with a strikeout of Brian Jordan. 2 of 6 10/25/2001 6:43 PM Arizona Diamondbacks News wysiwyg://101/http://diamondbacks.ri_20011021_gamer_news&team_id-ari "I felt like I was mentally spent walking off the mound," said Johnson, who gave way to Kim. "I knew that I got out of a situation that could have been a momentum shift easily to the Atlanta Braves had anything happened more than what already had happened." Johnson allowed a solo home run and RBI single by 40-year-old Mexican League castoff Julio Franco, but escaped further damage from a pair of bases-loaded jams. Relying more on the slider than his world-reknown fastball, Johnson allowed seven hits in seven innings, struck out eight and walked two. Although Bautista's batting average against Glavine was less than half that of Finley's, (.312 versus .154), he made his manager look like a genius in the fourth. With one out, Mark Grace singled, Matt Williams walked and Bautista came up. Given the green light on a 3-0 pitch, Bautista foul tipped a fastball. The next pitch was one of those Brenly talked about, out over the plate where Bautista could get his arms extended. He took it right back up the middle, just beyond second baseman Marcus Giles and into center field. Grace, no speedster, was sent home by third-base coach Chris Speier, but Andruw Jones' throw was cut off by Franco. That was a big favor to Grace, who felt his hamstring tighten en route to the plate and pulled up lame as he scored without a play. Franco tied the game leading off the fourth with an opposite-field home run off a 98-mph fastball that bounced off the top of the wall in right. With the bases loaded and two out in the fifth, Franco hit a one-hop shot at shortstop Tony Womack, who turned a force and end the inning. "That was the hardest-hit ball of the night," said Cox. "That killed us." But even when things went bad for the Diamondbacks, they turned out well. Grace's injury was an obvious example, as Brenly was forced to hit for his first baseman in the fifth inning after Giles' error on Counsell's grounder. Brenly sent up Durazo, who had struck out in his only LCS appearance in Game 2. Lefty against lefty, Durazo drove a fastball away down the left-field line, tucking it just inside the foul pole. Durazo said hitting coach Dwayne Murphy told him to look for something away, and he found it. "It was a fastball up, probably one of the only pitches I left up all night," said Glavine. "He hit it in probably the only place it was going to go out." It's been quite a ride for Durazo this year. He was counting on significant playing time at first base, but the team instead signed Grace as a free agent. He reluctantly became a premier bench player with five pinch-homers by May 20, but none since until Sunday. In late June he suffered a serious concussion in a plate collision with Colorado's Terry Shumpert. Later he suffered a back strain and for the second half of the season was pretty much invisible. Franco, however, wasn't finished with Johnson, who allowed a one-out 3 of 6 10/25/2001 6:43 PM Arizona Diamondbacks Ballpark wysiwyg://103/http://diamondbacks../balpark/ari_ballpark_history.jsp Live game audio Minor Leagues History Community Outreach Kids Fan Forum Fan Ballpark BALLPARK INFORMATION Ballpark History Construction Photos Seating & Pricing Ground Rules Spring Training Facility Ballpark A to Z Guide AREA INFORMATION Directions and Parking Local Area Information Bank One Ballpark: A Unique Baseball Bank One Ballpark 401 East Jefferson Street Experience Phoenix, AZ 85001 602-514-8400 From its signature swimming pool to its retractable roof, Bank One Ballpark has become one of the game's most recognizable landmarks in just two seasons. The ballpark is bounded by Jefferson Street on the north, Fourth street on the west and Seventh Street on the east. Easiest freeway access is by taking the Seventh Street exit from either I-10 (turn south) or I-17 (turn north). With an elevation of approximately 1,100 feet above sea level, Bank One Ballpark is the second-highest facility in the major leagues, trailing only Coors Field in Denver. Scientists have estimated that a fly ball will travel seven feet farther for every 1,000 feet of altitude. The Structure Ground was broken on Nov. 16, 1995, for a construction project that took 28 months and cost $354 million. It was designed by Ellerbe Becket, with architect Bill Johnson as the design principal. John Wasson was the project manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Huber, Hunt & Nichols serving as the managing contractor. The structure incorporates the traditional look of red brick and green structural steel in a setting that blends into its surroundings. Many of the design details are borrowed from the warehouse district that surrounds the Ballpark. One former warehouse, the Stern Produce Building, is 1 of 4 10/25/2001 6:45 PM Arizona Diamondbacks Ballpark wysiwyg://103/http://diamondbacks...balpark/ari_balpark_history.jsp actually preserved and incorporated into the south facade of the building. Appropriately, that former food warehouse is used as a commissary for the Ballpark's concessions stands. The Roof The retractable roof, comprising 9 million pounds of structural steel, operates on the same tried-and-true technology found in drawbridges and overhead traveling cranes. A pair of 200-horsepower motors open or close the roof in slightly more than four minutes, utilizing more than four miles of cable strung through a pulley system. Each half of the roof consists of three moveable trusses which telescope over a fixed end truss. The east and west sides of the roof can operate either in unison or independently. Either side of the roof can be opened to any position in order to maximize sunlight on the turf and minimize it on the interior steel and concrete. The Field It took some experimentation before the turf at Bank One Ballpark hit the Bull's Eye. In this case, it means Bull's Eye Bermuda, which was installed on the playing field over the All-Star Game break in July, 1999, and proved the best solution to date for growing a natural grass field in a roofed facility. For the 2000 season, the playing field was Bull's Eye Bermuda, overseeded with Kentucky blue grass and perennial rye grass. Even though more than half of the Diamondbacks' games are played with the retractable room in a closed position, the turf receives sunlight at every opportunity. Even on game days, the roof remains open into the afternoon to allow maximum exposure. When areas of the field receive too little natural sunlight, large incandescent growth lights provide a substitute. The layout of the field includes a unique, visible feature that takes baseball fans at Bank One Ballpark back in time almost 100 years. There is a dirt path between the pitchers mound and home plate, reminiscent of the paths seen in very early pictures of the game. In a way, that path is symbolic of the Bank One Ballpark experience: The best of baseball history displayed in a setting that features all the modern conveniences. Keeping Cool The 8,000-ton cooling system is the equivalent of air conditioning for more than 2,500 typical Arizona homes. The system incorporates air handlers and a large cooling tower on the south side of the Ballpark. The air handlers push 1.2 million cubic feet of air per minute across cooling coils containing water chilled to 48 degrees (several degrees cooler than an average residential system). The system, which is designed to bring the temperature down by 30 degrees in three hours, is configured to deliver cool air only to the seating areas and concourses. It will not cool the entire volume of the Ballpark. Seating and Tickets Because Bank One Ballpark is a baseball-only facility, its sight lines are second to no other facility. More than 80 percent of the seats are inside the foul poles, and there is no upper deck around the outfield. What's more, the seats down the foul lines beyond the infield are slightly canted so that no fan will have to twist his or her body to look toward second base and the pitcher's mound. All lower-deck seating is directly accessible from the 2 of 4 10/25/2001 6:45 PM Arizona Diamondbacks Ballpark wysiwyg://103/htp://diamondbacks...balpark/ari_balpark_history.jsp lower concourse, which is at the same level as the outside pedestrian entry plazas and gates. The concourse itself is open to the playing field so fans can stay in touch with the game while using the concessions, merchandise store or other amenities. The Infiniti Diamond Level concourse is designed to serve as a continuous lounge and dining area servicing approximately 4,400 club seats. Above those seats are 69 private luxury suites designed to offer the utmost in comfort and catering. One floor up from the suite level, the upper concourse will seat approximately 20,000 fans. Escalators on the west side of Bank One Ballpark will take guests to either of the upper levels. Finally, behind the centerfield wall is the Fry's Picnic Pavilion with seats available to individuals or groups, The Pavilion has picnic tables on tiers to allow approximately 600 fans a full view of the action while enjoying a picnic or family gathering. During the 1999 National League Division Series, a portion of the picnic area was converted into an overflow press box. Food The Ballpark offers a wide variety of food and drink. Fans heading for the rotunda that marks the main entrance will have an opportunity to stop by Leinenkugel's Ballyard Brewery in the plaza along Fourth Street. The brew pub's game-day menu, specially tailored to fans, will feature items that will not require utensils so that guests can carry food to their seats. The 20,000-square foot building features a 60-foot, 6-inch mahogany bar in the main restaurant, mirroring the distance between the pitcher's rubber and home plate. The main concourse and the upper concourse feature approximately a quarter mile of concession stands, offering traditional ballpark fare, while specialty stands located throughout the park give fans their choice of such treats as McDonald's (Bank One Ballpark is the only major-league facility in the United States to have the Golden Arches inside), Blimpie's sandwiches, Little Caesar's pizza and Garcia's Mexican food. Fans will also find specialty ice cream, yogurt, smoothies, shaved ice and specialty popcorn. There's even a farmer's market. Fielder's Choice offers a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Friday's Front Row Sports Grill in the left-field corner gives fans an opportunity to enjoy fine food and beverages while they watch the game from the terraced seating. The Sports Grill is open on non-game days as well. The upper concourse houses two 6,000-square foot Miller Lite beer gardens that overlook the playing field. On the Infiniti Diamond Level, the Arizona Baseball Club in the right-field corner fills the needs of fans in the club seats or luxury suites. Sun Pool Party Pavilion On a warm evening in Phoenix, some folks like to relax around the pool. Others prefer to go to the ballgame. Patrons of the Sun Pool Pavilion at Bank One Ballpark will be able to do both. In recreating an upscale Arizona backyard, the Pavilion gives about 35 guests the opportunity to see the Diamondbacks play while enjoying a swimming pool, hot tub, fountains, catering and other amenities. The Pavilion is located next to the outfield wall in right-center. With the pool approximately 415 feet from home plate, home runs occasionally make a splash. When a Diamondback homers, water cannons celebrate 3 of 4 10/25/2001 6:45 PM Arizona Diamondbacks Ballpark wysiwyg://103/htp://diamondbacks...hallpark/ari_balpark_history.jsp by firing streams 30 to 35 feet into the air. Parking Like any downtown sports facility, Bank One Ballpark utilizes the established parking infrastructure for its guests. An attached 1,500-car parking garage will provide parking for guests on the Infiniti Diamond Level. Away from the park, downtown Phoenix boasts some 33,000 parking spaces within a 15-minute walk of Bank One Ballpark. The Diamondbacks estimate that about 15,000 spaces are necessary to accommodate a sellout crowd. Fox Sports Net Arizona DiamondTown While Bank One Ballpark offers fans up-to-the-minute amenities and comfort, it also evokes a sense of baseball's history and tradition. Nowhere is this more evident than on the main concourse in Fox Sports Arizona DiamondTown. Video walls, a graphic timeline and three-dimensional exhibits give Diamondbacks fans 10 themed areas featuring the best of baseball history. Music Traditional baseball means organ music, and Bank One Ballpark has some of the best in the talented fingers of Bobby Freeman. He moved into the major leagues without a hitch in 1998 after being a long-time fan favorite as organist for the Pacific Coast League's Phoenix Firebirds. The Plain Dealer October 12, 2001 Friday, Sports Final / All SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. 05 LENGTH: 335 words BODY: SCOUTING REPORT Eye on Jordan: Several NBA scouts were in attendance, including Walker D. Russell (Toronto Raptors). Russell also watched Michael Jordan during his secret training in Chicago over the summer. Russell said Jordan might not have the same physical attributes of the past, but his knowledge of the game is even better. "This time, he's trying to bring the young guys instead of just doing it himself," Russell said. "When you're young, you just want to run and do it by yourself, and he's done that." Russell pointed to his head as he added: "Now he has it up here, and he'll bring them along with him. "He isn't as explosive as he was, but he's still MJ. Before, he'd beat you in the air and on the floor. Now he'll just beat you on the floor. He's still going to win." Press Room: More than 300 media members jammed into the Pistons' media area. ESPN, FOX, CNN, Sports Illustrated and reporters from Japan, Italy and Spain were in attendance. Pistons spokesmen said they had not hosted so many writers and broadcasters since the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. Ironically, the Chicago Bulls, led by Jordan, swept the Pistons that year and moved on to their first of six titles. More Mike: Jordan will make his national television debut at 8 p.m. tomorrow on TNT in Washington's exhibition game against New Jersey. Jordan's regular season debut will be the NBA's season opener on Oct. 30 at New York. On Nov. 3, the Wizards will host the Philadelphia 76ers in a televised game on NBC. From the locker room: "I'm used to this media attention because of Kobe [Byrant] and Shaq [O'Neal]," said former Lakers guard Tyronn Lue, now with the Wizards. "The only difference is that all of the media is on one person and the attention was split between two people in L.A." Jordan line: 16 minutes, 4-8 from the field, 0-1 from 3-point range, 0-0 from the free throw line, three rebounds, one personal foul, one steal, two turnovers, one blocked shot, eight points. -Branson Wright LOAD-DATE: October 18, 2001 prev Document 25 of 35 next About LexisNexis I Terms and Conditions I Privacy Policy I Support Identifier Copyright © 2001 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
