Events require me tonight to talk to you about the
growing tension between this country and Soviet Russia.
I regret that this need has arisen during a political
campaign, and I must ask you to join with me tonight in putting
politics aside.
It is imperative that the American people fully under-
stand the situation which now confronts the world.

Two weeks ago, Secretary of State Marshall went to
SERVICE
Paris to attend the present session of the United Nations. There
he has expressed for this Government views which represent the
outlook of the people of this country. The current dispute with
Soviet Russia over the Russian blockade of Berlin has now been
referred to the United Nations.
It is now plain that the trend of events which has
caused us all so much concern during the past several years is
rapidly approaching a point of crisis.
The world is now well aware that the trend is
dangerously toward a major breach between Russia and the
Western powers -- a breach which could lead to war.
