BERVICE"

January 18, 1950
In a conversation on other matters today, the Secretary
told Senator Vandenberg that he had been thinking about the
question the Senator raised at the hearings recently on
extension of aide to China. Mr. Acheson said he felt there
was a good possibility we could "work something out". He
said that he would like to talk to the Senator about it in the
next day or so.
Senator Vandenberg said that he would be unable to see
the Secretary until the last of the week. Mr. Acheson promised
to call him back on Friday regarding a possible appointment
over the weekend to discuss this matter.
This, of course, refers to the possible broadening of the
China aide legislation to give the Department wider lattitude
in the expenditure of funds.
