Memorandum of Telephone Conversation -
The Secretary
Senator Knowland
The Secretary telephoned Senator Knowland to tell him of
his California trip. He said he had met a lot of the Senator's
friends there, he had certainly been treated well, and had what
he thought was a successful trip. He said he had told the Senstor's
friends they sometimes had differences of opinion, which he regretted,
but that they conducted themselves as gentlement concerning these
differences. The Senator said he appreciated this.
Senator Knowland said he knew the Secretary was very busy and
probably wouldn't have time to do it, but he wanted the Department's
attentioned called to his remarks of yesterday when he had inserted
in the Record the Secretary's two speeches, and then he would like
to talk with someone from the Department in the not too distant
future. The Secretary told the Senator he would be glad to see him
himself.
Senator Knowland then inquired when Dr. Jessup and Mr.
- Butterworth would return. The Secretary replied that they are
back, and the Senator indicated he would like to talk with Dr. Jessup,
following up their conversation before Dr. Jessup went to the Far
East. The Secretary told him he was sure that could be worked out
next week.
