Mr. Acheson called Mr. Lovett shortly after nine
o'clock this morning to discuss with him the draft
statement which Mr. Lovett had submitted yesterday
for our consideration and which General Marshall
was considering using in his press conference this
afternoon.
Mr. Acheson told Mr. Lovett that we had considered
the statement carefully and it was our feeling that it
would be preferable to stick to the unimaginative "no
comment" rather than to make some statement along
the lines proposed by Mr. Lovett. Mr. Acheson said that
a statement along these lines would tend, in his opinion,
to stir up more controversy. particularly since it would
appear that the argument was between General MacArthur
and the Department of State or the President and was not
a matter of concern to the Department of Defense. Mr.
Lovett agreed that this was possible and indicated his
concurrence with Mr. Acheson's views on this matter.
