GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 16-61120-1 Sir Zafrullah Khan called at 10:30 a.ll. and remained for 10 minutes. The Pakistan Foreign Minister said that his government was anxious to occupy the seat on the Security Council that would become vacant when India retired from the Council at the end of this year; that New Zealand, which might fill this vacancy, had indicated that it was not prepared to do so; that informal inquiries addressed to the United Kingdom indicated that there would be no objection to Pakistan from any government, although the Union of South Africa had not yet expressed an opinion in this matter; and that, if Pakistan should be the Commonwealth candidate for the Security Council in 1952, he hoped the United States would find it possible to support its election. Sir Zafrullah said he intended to take up this question with the British Foreign Minister on his way through London to Karachi next week. I replied that I had been advised that no commitment was possible at this time, but that it would seem reasonable for United States DECLASSIFIED E.
