Mr. Murphy telephoned the Secretary and said that
he had talked with the President about the way in which
Senator Morese's inquiry about investigating the China
Lobby should be handled. The President, he reported,
thought that the best course to follow probably would
be for the Secretary to say to the Committee that he
had been in touch with the President and that the
President would be glad to see that whatever information
there is on the subject in the Executive Departments
is pulled together and provided to a committee. It
may take some time to do this, but he would issue
written instructions to the Department of the Treasury
and Department of Justice.
The Secretary said that he would like to hold
off for the following day on this matter, until he
had time to look at the papers which the Department
was getting together and to talk a little further with
the President and give to him any suggestions the De-
partment might have when they looked further at the
material which the Department has and is getting together.
He would then be prepared to give the Committee his answer
on Saturday. But it was physically impossible for him
to look at the material in the Department until tomorrow,
and he would like to be able to consider the President's
