2953 VEUTHLI SECURITY DEPARTMENT OF STATE S/S Memorandum of Conversation cytomash 10/26/51 DATE: December 21, 1951 SUBJECT: Italian-Yugoslav talk on Trieste "NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS corf 463 SERVICE" PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary Signor Alberto Tarchiani, Ambassador of Italy Mr. G. W. Perkins, Assistant Secretary, EUR 326 COPIES TO: LIMITED DISTRIBUTION TO: S - The Secretary G - Mr. Matthews EUR EE - Mr. Barbour u.s. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE 16-61120-1 While Ambassador Tarchiani was in this morning to receive the answer to the Ita lian note of December 8, 1951, he told me that conversations between the Italians and Yugoslavs had been resumed in Paris by Ambassador Guidotti and Bebler. He said the atmosphere in which they had started off was much better, the Italians having stated their desire to settle the matter on the ethnic principle and the Yugo- slavs having indicated willingness to talk along these lines. Although no date was mentioned, this meeting apparently took place last week. Another meeting had been held on Monday, December 17, and as yet the Ambassador had no information as to what took place at that meeting. He promised to keep us informed of anything he heard.
