His Excellency Senhor Walther Moreira Salles, newly ap-
pointed Brazilian Ambassador, called on me at 2:30 p.m. today
to present copies of his credentials and to request an appoint-
ment with the President.
After the usual exchange of courtesies, the Ambassador as-
sured me that he was greatly honored by his appointment as Am-
bassador to the United States and that he would do everything
in his power to further the good relations now existing between
Brazil and the. United States.
The Ambassador mentioned my proposed trip to Brazil and
informed me that his Government is looking forward with a great
deal of pleasure to my visit. We discussed some aspects of the
visit, particularly the date of my arrival there. I informed the
Ambassador that Mr. Miller and I would work out further details
and inform him.
No matters of a political nature were discussed.
