THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY The Santanoni SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL STUDIES Saranac Lake, N. Y. 5th July 1953 My dear Mr. Acheson May I just say how much I enjoyed last Thurs- day's session at the Institute and how much I appreciate being made a member of this group? I would have told you 80 at the end of the session, but I had to leave early to get up to my house and pack my bag before !leaving for the train. I em sorry that I must miss the session of 8th- 9th July. But I have been told emphatically by my physicians that I must get something of a holiday this summer, lest my arthritis get completely out of control. But I shall be present on the 15th- 16th and again on the 29th-30th; and after the August interlude I shall attend regularly. Please accept my apológies, also, for hopping around so much last time. Some of this was essential as part of Institute staff work, which, I fear, fell down rather badly last time. Some was the result of the fact that one, cannot quite "dis- engage" when a conference is held on one's own home grounds. I'11 try to be less peripatétic hereafter. As regards the President's evasion of some of the troublesome issues before him, I am reminded of a letter which Laud wrote Strafford about Charles I: "The King would rather not hear than hear". This single sentence--called to my attention by Miss C. V. Wedgwood--speaks volumes. S. With most cordial greetings = is SERVICE Sincerely yours Nalur Edward Mead Earle Mr. Dean Acheson Washington
