Dear Sir,
I am an unlucky danish student, who for the moment is
studying the Truman Doctrine and its placing in the foreign policy
of the United States 1947-50. Unlucky because a study of this cha-
racter unquestionably would be much easier to do in your country.
The study is going to be a part of my danish examination for the
M.A. degree in history, which - in so far as I know - correspond
to the doctor's degree in history in the anglo-saxon countries.
In connection with my study I naturally observed the pu-
blishing of your memoirs in the fall 1969. I procured them immedia-
tely and read them with great benefit. Surely they are not alone
very informative but also very amusing. Especially I find your
connections with the Congress instructive. But I do have a problem.
In your foreword it is said, that you participated in a series of
seminars in 1953-54 with among others former officials from your
turn as secretary of state " to record (your) recollections of how
the major foreign policies of President Truman's Administration
came into being and (your) appraisals of the considerations that
affected them and (you)
Unfortunately I don't realize what this formulation con-
ceal. As far as I know the seminars haven't brought about any publi- -
cation, which is officially accessible. I hope I am wrong and in
that case ask you to give me the title of the publication. Should the
seminars not have been published I would be much obliged to you if
it was possible for you to send me some information about the results
of the seminars. Invariably the words "These seminars added to the
account of those times the essential factors of causation that the
bare official record so rarely reveals" must attract the attention
of any scholar, who studies the foreign policy of the Truman Admini-
stration.
Yours sincerely
