7/16/53 - Wire IV - p.1 DA. We get along here into the week of June 12, where we come to the last week of the Conference. Almost all of this is in private session, and it is impossible, from any papers I have, to find out what we put up. We had all kinds of meetings, and they lasted hours. For instance, on the 14th of June, we had one from 3:30 to 5:45, and then another one fron 6:30 to 9 o'clock. We have one here - one meeting of 6 hours, from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, and we broke up and met again at 11 D'clock, and stayed there until a quarter to at 1 o'clock (Rieber?) one. Then we went back to the office/and met until 2, with you and Yost and Reamer and Murphy. That must have been.. (confused) .an awful lot of activity. Q. Do finish about Vishinsky. DA. Are we now on the. Q. Vishinsky and Bevin. DA. Well, Vishinsky, very obviously, was (poking?) Bevin. He would be rude, and somewhat contemptuous, and take cracks at Bevin all the time, I think in the hope of getting Bevin to flash out and say some things which he could then pick up and use in some way. Bevin was pretty good about not doing this, but he was very seriously provoked. the did Q. The renarks that were so unpleasant and personal, in Apformal sessions, way that unpleasentmess also pervade your relations with these men? ? DA. Well, (it means) that in this CFM he was not personally obnoxious at all, compared to what happened at later ones, this was really quite a civilized performance. He would tease Bevin, and try to irritate him and provoke him into things, but he didn't call us cutthroats and capitalist warmongers (confused) none of that went on, it was really quite a tedious performance, all the way through, and we had reasonably courteous and proper relations coming into the meetings, and going out. After the meetings, the Fronch had sandwiches and champagne out in the gallery of the Palais Rose. The Russians never would stay, they just picked up their bags and went right on through and went home. The rest of us would stay around and chat for a few minutes, but they were courteous, always said goodnight, and bowed, and hoped you had a good sleep, and one thing or another.. Q. There were several dinners, dinner at the Soviet Embassy. and so on, which were pleasant
