But I think the really significant parti in terms of checking on MacArthur's statement, might have occurred in the private conversation wi th the President about which I have never seen any account. VOICE: What was the President's object in having the private conversations unreported 0 MacArthur Was that part of the plan? DR. JESSUP: No, I don't think it was part of the plan. When MacArthur came in, the Presi- dent took him away to a separate house and they talked while all the rest of us went to the place where the meeting was to be held. It was the President's idea of the moment, so far as I can tell. MR. ACHESON: That's the sort of lethal things in which Chinfs of State get into. MacArthur was practically a Chief of State at this time -- he was the Mikado of Japan and Korea. Several times when the President gots together with Attlee or Churchill or someone, a great tendency is to have these fellows go off by themselves; this is just sheer murder and never ought to occur to a dog.
