At 11:15 A.M. Dr. Steelman and Mr. Stowe met with the following
representatives of the steel companies and United Steel Workers, CIO.
For the Steel Companies:

J. L. Mauthe, President, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co.
Charles M. White, Republic Steel Corporation
A. B. Homer, Bethlehem Steel Corporation
Clarence Randall, Inland Steel Company
John A. Stephens, V. P., Industrial Relations, U. S. Steel
For the United Steel Workers of America, CIO
Philip Murray, President
James Thimmes, Vice President
David J. McDonald, Secy-Treas.
Arthur J. Goldberg, Gen. Counsel
Joseph Germano, District Director
James J. Thomas, District Director
Joseph P. Molony, District Director
Dr. Steelman said he felt that everyone knew the seriousness of the
situation and there was no need to review that or the events to date. He
indicated that he thought they might wish to meet without either he or
Mr. Stowe present and that if they felt that would be advisable that he
and Mr. Stowe would leave but would be ready to talk with them as a group
or with the individual members of the group as requested. Dr. Steelman
and Mr. Stowe left the room about 11:25. At 11:45 the conference requested
an additional room for a subcommittee to meet. The subcommittee consisted
of Mr. White, Adm. Moreell, and Mr. Stephens from industry, and Mr. Murray,
Mr. McDonald and Mr. Goldberg from the union.
At 12:20 Mr. Fairless asked to talk to Dr. Steelman and during the
course of this conversation indicated that after Dr. Steelman and Mr. Stowe
left the room, at his suggestion they had suspended any speeches and decided
to get down to business, which had resulted in the designation of a subcommittee
which was then out.
